Sozo Caps Ordered For My Marshall

If these are just as good or better than the original mustard Mullard/Phillips caps, life will be good inside my ole 50 watt Marshall head? We'll see....:fingersx:

Re: Sozo Caps Ordered For My Marshall

Nice one, I think you'll like them. They will be fully burned in after 100 hours, but after 20 hours they will be pretty close to the fully burned in sound - they'll sound clearer after a bit of burning in. You can try pulling the ouput tubes, and running a CD into the amp with the standby on to burn in the caps while you're away, but my preferred method is to play the amp a lot!

What tubes are you running in the Marshall?

Re: Sozo Caps Ordered For My Marshall

They sound fantastic. I have them in a couple of my heads.

I like them---haven't tried the 'premium' versions but the cheaper versions sound fine to me. I have them in an old Traynor head (mustards were stock; I changed values to .02/.02/330pF), and they work well in BF Fenders as well.

I'm still using NOS Mullards both output and preamp and Amperex preamp tubes....

Do these caps install a certain way to ground etc. like some other highend poly caps like the Hovlands and others I've seen that have a green and red colored end.

Re: Sozo Caps Ordered For My Marshall

The Hovlands would be my cap of choice for a stereo amp, but do you guys think that they might be too clean for guitar amp application? Seems to me that with a guitar amp, those distortions and imperfections that drive high end stereo guys crazy are actually desirable up to a point.:fingersx:

Basically the Sozo caps are "supposed" to be like the original Mullard/Phillips Mustard caps of early Marshalls? That's the only reason I'm trying them...What I don't want,is caps that make my amp sound "audio hi fi"!

These caps are supposed to make a Marshall warmer and smoother from what others are reporting back about em? I need to hear them for myself and see if there's some truth to it?

Re: Sozo Caps Ordered For My Marshall

Yeah---I didn't care for Auricaps, Hovlands, etc; high-end audio types. They're meant for sound reproduction as opposed to sound production...you dont see people pulling out Bumblebees and installing Hovlands to make an old Gibson 'sound better'...

Excellent point!

I'm told that these Sozos might make the amp a bit darker, but smoother? Kevlar is that what you hear with these caps compared to say OD Or Mallory 150s?

Re: Sozo Caps Ordered For My Marshall

Actually you DO see people pulling caps out of Gibsons and replacing them with Hovlands:fingersx: An let us not forget replacing those screwy pots with audio taper CTS pots. The Hovlands are known for having no sound of their own.
