I did a Frampton trib for a buddy of mine a few years back, before they actually came out with one. He's acquired a few more guitars since then and decided since he isn't really an LP guy that he wanted to sell it. So of course since I need it like I need another hole in my head I ended up taking it. It is actually a really nice guitar (2000 Unsung factory) and I NEED it because a few tweaks and it'll be a trib to Ace Frehley's black Custom from the cover of Guitar Player, one of the more important guitars in my world anyhow. :)

Got a set of Grover 103C tuners that mimic the look of the Grover Futuras on Ace's, chrome hardware was already in my collection of parts and as luck would have it a pair of stupid hot Ibanez V2's in double cream where dropped in my lap. So that leaves the bridge position....and a quick Reverb search found a nice clean DiM Super D in double cream for the right price.

I'll finish it up in the next day or so.

I've owned a couple of real three pickup 50's Les Paul Customs. Love the sound of a middle and bridge humbucker combined but there's not enough room to pick.

I have that magazine issue.

Sweet ride. I have a project guitar I was planning to do that with...but just have never got around to it.

Looks great and I do not get the issue people have with picking on a 3 pickup guitars. You are picking above the stings the pickup should be no problem. People do not have problems playing Strats.

ive never got along with three pup gibsons, the middle pup messes with my picking hand or picking. i havent messed around enough to figure out which one it is but every time i pick one up, its the same. love the look of the black with the cream and a super d in the bridge of a lp sounds like rock and roll

Should have known this wasn't a Sun Ra thread...but had to check anyhow.

ha!

The only way I would ever want a three pickup LP would be if it had a Freeway toggle in it. And 4 push/pull pots.

So I tweaked it a little, I changed the neck pickup to a DiM PAF Master. Really a great sounding pickup. Local guy had a double cream up for sale cheap so a little serendipity for sure.

As much fun as it would be to make it a smoker I think at least for now I’ll skip that part.

The V-2 in the middle sounds amazing, really wasn’t expecting that. The Super D sounds exactly as I hoped it would. I did flip the green & red wires on the DiMs so the phase matched the 2 wire V-2. I also changed the middle ring to a neck ring so it is totally out of the way now. Epi rings are larger than Gibson’s so it needed to be done.

I also ordered a Gotoh bridge to replace the stock Epi pos they use and a custom truss rod cover since I nicknamed the guitar “Curly”, Ace fans will understand.

the Grover 103C tuners are really really nice too!

those are some oddball tuners, dunno if ive seen them other than that gp cover with ace
