Good morning, bass players!
I search in the forum and the internet, and I did not see informations about the combination of Seymour Duncan SPB-1 + SJB-2b. Do you think it's a good combination? Have any incompatibility?
Do anyone use this?
In my search about a PJ combo, some user talk the best combination to SPB-1 is the STK-J2.

The best regards,
Waiting your help!

Hi 109eh and welcome to the SDUGF. I have that combination in a Warwick Rockbass Streamer. It's a great combination for a PJ because it gives extra growl from the bridge pickup and vintage warm and woody tone from the neck pickup. If hum-canceling is of concern to you, go for the STK-J2 in the bridge position. If not, go for the SJB-2b which is one of SD's most popular bass pickups and is well loved by the editors of Bass Player magazine.

Happy thumping!

ive build basses with both those setups and they sound great.

the hot jazz is a great bridge pup and matches really well with the p bass pup. like evan said, if you want humcancelling the hot jazz stack is a good option. its a little more refined sounding than the hot jazz but still a good match for the p

+1

"Hot" Jazz Bass bridge position makes good output match for "vintage" split coils Precision Bass pickup.

Thaks, guys.
Evan Skopp, do you have anything recorded with this combination (audio or video)?
I do not understand very well, if I do not like the noise of que "hum", I buy the STK-J2 (bridge)? Is it or did I understand wrong?

Re: SPB1 with SJB-2b or STK-J2

You understood correctly. :)

The SJB-2b is a single coil. It is, therefore, prone to radio frequency interference and hum.

The STK-J2b is a dual coil, hum-cancelling design. Hence, blending its signal with the P pickup will not introduce unwanted hum and/or interference.

I recommend never matching a single coil J to a P pickup. J pickups were originally designed to be used together, since the bridge and neck J pickups would cancel hum when used together. There is no way to use a single coil J pickup in a P-J bass without inviting unwanted noise.

There are many good options for hum cancelling J pickups. I prefer an in-line split-coil design, but if my choice was a single coil or a stack, I would choose the stack.

Here are the common hum cancelling J pickup designs.

Stacked coils

Re: SPB1 with SJB-2b or STK-J2

Hello,
I'm new on this forum but have a same P/J configuration on my "JB special".
Has I'm found of it in my Jazz-bass, I've put a STK-J2b in the bridge position of my JB special.
In the neck position I still have the original in it but I'm not quite satisfied of the general sound...
I've tried to change it with a SPB-3 but had come to the conclusion this one is a little bigger and doesn't fit...
As I do not want to cut in my 86' JB special, I came back to the original one...

Now I'm wandering :
- Is there another SD pick-up that would fit it?
- As in my Jazz bass the capacitor is a 0,047, should the capacitor (0,022) in my JB special be the cause of my disapointing?

If any of you could help or redirect me to the right thread, it should be great.

Thanks in advance,

F.

Welcome to the forum.

What, precisely, is a "JB Special"? (I'm guessing a Fender American Special Jazz Bass. If I am correct about this, your disappointment is perfectly understandable. Some of the materials used in the Fender American Special series are inferior to those found in the American Standard, American Vintage Re-Issue and Deluxe American ranges.)

Hi! "JB Special" stands for a "Fender Jazz Bass Special"... Same as the signature "Duff Mc Kagan" but from '86/87.
It has a P/J configuration with a TBX as tone controller, a switch (Neck-Both-Bridge) & 2 vol.
Nothing to do with an "American Special JB" ;-)
