my amp has a 10 yr old crate version of the emminence v12......needless to say the speaker could be better

whats a good 12" speaker for a 30 watt ac30ish amp (its ac30clone, but with plexi gain channel clone....i think?)

i was thinking mauybe a Jensen P12R
if i dont have to spend alot id be happy, (the jensen is under 60) but if there is nothing good out there for cheap, i will pay up....

what are some good 12" speakers for combo amps, ac30 style, for classic rock and blues, and anything that isnt overly expensive...

Re: speaker advice

Well, the best speakers that ever sat in an AC30 that I played were the Celestion Blue Alnicos. The big drawback now is that they're made in China these days and they cost minimum of 225 bucks a piece! Yow!

I just tried the new Emminence Red fang. It's a Celestion Blue clone for the most part. Handles more power.

Great speaker. I have one coming my way in the mail right now! Might be here tomorrow. Going to put it in my Delxue. They're only 100 bucks or so.

I'm not sure you'll be really very happy with the Jensen. I have a p12Q in my deluxe and it does sort of fart out a bit.

Those red fangs at 220 a pair might be too expensive, but that's up to you.

Emminecne is also making several other really cool looking "brittish" speakers that are all ceramic models. I've not heard any of them yet, but the guy that owns Roccaforte Amps was gushing about a model called "The Toniker".

Take a look at the emminence site and read their descriptions. Apparently, they've got their act together by all reports. I can only attest to the red fang.

Also, check out Weber. They make some excellent ones. I've tried several. The best for your amp might be the Silver Dogs or the Blue Dogs. As you can guess, the Blue Dogs are celestion blue clones. They're nice, but actually cost more than the Red Fangs and less than the Celestions.

Another option that Vox used were the ceramic Greenback Celestions. You can probably find a pair of those for a decent price.

Check with Lew's brother Bruce at www.missionamps.com

I bought a pair of Mojo 12s from him...Mojo's version of the Celestion Greenback & Vintage 30 (BV-30V/BV-30H...I think are the models). I finally got them in my cabinet the other day & I have to say, they are so FRIGGIN' smooth. He did something to them that "chemically" breaks them in...too much!!!

They're made in the good ol' US of A & cost me $75.00 each !

I have them in a slant 2x12 Marshall cab...had my THD UniValve running thru it with a JJ Tesla EL84/12AX7 set-up & the Vox vibe was smack dab hitting me in the chin like my date on prom night!!!!

For $75.00, you can't go wrong, IMHO !!!

Re: speaker advice

yea my amp is a 1X12, so i only need one, which is why i wouldnt mind spending like 100, but eventually i wanna get a 2X12 cab and run the amp as a 3X12, (hehe)....ill look around, keep em coming

Bruce (http://www.missionamps.com) places the speaker on his bench with the cone facing up, hooks the speaker up to a signal generator that pumps out some low tones and then takes a little bowl of acetone and a brush and "paints" the edge surround with acetone which removes some of the dope around the edge and also softens the paper fibers around the edge as if the speaker had been gently played for 10 years! Improves the low end and opens the speaker up a little. Good call Puck-mon!

Stay away from the Jensen P12R if you're looking for volume and a deep, clear low end...not much volume or low end. Nice overdriven tones for blues and rootsy stuff, but low efficiency and a small magnet and voice coil. Fart tone at any kind of real volume. Lew

Re: speaker advice

Same thing that Bad Cat does with their Celstion V30's and they sell them as specially modified by Bad Cat.

There is an art to doing this though. Don't try it at home unless you know what you're doing.

It's actually not that hard to do. You can just pump some music through the speaker too and start painting the surround with acetone. The acetone dissolves the edge dope and then evaporates. Do it outside if you can...fumes from that stuff are NOT good for you. But it's not hard and you can't really mess up if you just stop when the speaker seems to have reached it's maximium potencial. In other words, you'll hear the low end and the tone open up and then after a while the tone won't really improve any further. At that point just stop, let the speaker dry for a few minutes and then install it and have fun playing your new/old speaker. Lew

The 30 Watt Weber Blue Dog sounds perfect for that amp. You can get a 50 watt version also. They are $90 new from weber

The Blue Dog always reminds me of the vox tone. It is very good with classic Marshall tone also. The midrange response is excellent and the low end is very tight.

That is my favorite Weber 12" speaker...similar to a Vox/Celestion Blue but not as extended a high end. I prefer the Vox/Celestion Blue, but the Blue Dog is a very very cool speaker! Sounds great in a 5E3 Fender tweed Deluxe or a clone of a Deluxe. Not appropriate for a blackface Fender, IMO, but killer in a tweed. Lew
