Speaker cab question

Do convertible cabs sound different when in closed back form than a cab that is closed back only? I think I would like the options of a convertible, but I want to make sure the closed back option would cut it.

Are you talking something like a Mesa cab where you can go half back or closed back?

Basically a closed back cab will always give you more frontal projection and tighter lows....

An open back cab loses some of the lows and tightness,but spreads out some of the sound from behind and in front...I prefer my clean tones to come from an open backed cab and my overdriven tones from a closed back..

Mesa did a nice job of getting both out of some of their cabinets...I used to just leave my 2x12 Mesa cab totally closed back though...

I'm saying that when a convertible cab is in closed back form, will the sound be the same as a closed back that can't be changed.

It shouldn't make any difference, as long as the internal volume dimensions, and the materials are the same.

One factor could be if the back plate isn't or can't be fastened as tightly. For example, you can tune the tightness of a Marshall 4x12 by how tight you fasten the screw to the middle post. If the cab in question doesn't have a middle post, then it may sound a little different from a cab that does.
