Speaker for 6V6 Tweed

I'm hearing great things about the Weber 12A125A Alnico speaker. Just about everyone who puts it in loves it, and says it beats the equivalent Jensen. My question is, how does it compare to a Celestion Greenback?

All you Tweedy lovers gotta know!

Thanks,
Noth

Re: Speaker for 6V6 Tweed

Scott_F put a Weber 12A125A in my Celtic Caitlin 6V6 tweed. I think it sounds awesome. I'm not sure how it compares to the Greenback. Scott and Lew would be good guys to answer that question.

Re: Speaker for 6V6 Tweed

I have tried and really liked the 12A125 but never the 12A125A so I'll pass on that for now...like I said the 12A1215 is a great speaker in a tweed Deluxe but IMO the BEST speaker for a Tweed Deluxe is a Celestion Blue but it costs a fair bit of green so most people don't bother.

The Weber 12A125, 12A125A, and Greenback are NOTHING alike...Im gonna suggest AGAINST a greenback in a small tweed combo...Greenbacks are great speaker but lack bottom in a 1x12 open back setting...if you want to use a Ceramic speaker get a G12H30...I also have played a tweed deluxe with a G12H30 and was really blown away by it too...it wasn't as nice as the BLue but it was great.

Lastly...a lot of guys will suggest you a really high power ceramic speaker in a small tweed, and they'll say it's great for keeping the lows tight and giving the amp more headroom...IMO a high powered ceramic speaker in a smallish tweed amp really just chokes the amp down to the point of losing a lot of tone...

good luck!

Re: Speaker for 6V6 Tweed

Thanks, guys. Initially I had though nothing but a Celestion Blue will do. But being just a home player, I worry about blowing the walls down (the Blue is 100dB efficient!). I guess I could build an attentuator but I think it would hurt the tone of the amp. So the Greenback and the Blue are very different animals?

The Blue and the Greenback are very different animals for sure...how much power are you talking about with this amp??? If you need to trim pff a fe db's get a Weber Mass...I have one and love it!

Re: Speaker for 6V6 Tweed

for a ceramic tone i think the cannabis rex might work fine and it will add some beef to the tone, great speaker. the blue is just about the perfect guitar speaker for anything but you dont want to blow one ($$$$) and they are loud. i love the greenback and it can work in an open backed cab but in general most people wont love the lack of bottom. if you are running the amp full up most of the time i think it can work great but most people arent gonna be doing that.

the g12h is a great choice too, one of my favorites but its loud also. i really like small tweed amps with alnico speakers. i use a red fang which is nice but also loud. a weber 12a125 or 12a125a would be a great choice. ive heard them both (not in the same amp or anything) and they were both nice. the only difference is a curved seam i believe. the 'a' might have been a little tighter on the bottom

The Weber 12a125 is a tremendous speaker. I have it in my 12w Clark Beufort Special and it sounds incredible. I agree with everything said regarding the Blue vs Greenback. I would stay away from the Greenback in a tweed. The Blue is very highly regarded for tweeds but it is super-expensive. The Weber sounds awesome and it's plenty loud to gig with if the opportunity presents itself.

If your amp is a Tweed Deluxe style amp put a Celestion Alnico Blue 12 in it.

If it's a blackface style Deluxe or Deluxe Reverb put a Celestion ceramic G12H30 12 in it.

Either are better than any 12 I've ever heard from Weber...although I do like some of his 10's.

Thanks again, guys. Looks like my original thought (Celestion Blue) was the best - but it'll take longer to save for that one! The amp puts out about 15 Watts, but remember, I'm an apartment dweller. So Lew, looks like you're saying the Celestion Blue is worth it? Funny no one's mentioned Weber's version of it, the Blue Dog, but it's not cheap either - an extra $50 gets you the real thing. I'm definitely sold on Alnico, though. None of the descriptions for Ceramic appeals to me. Yeah, I've looked at the Weber attenuators - I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Weber's Blue Dog sounds a little like a Celestion Blue but compared side by side with a Celestion Alnico Blue, the Weber is thumby in the mids and lacks the chimey highs of a real Celestion Alnico Blue or Silver Blue. Weber does not like alot of highs. Alot of people who don't play guitar well do not like treble because it shows up thier sloppy playing technique...maybe that's the reason Weber disses the Celestion as being to bright. In fact, the reissue is a little brighter than my 50 year old Celestion Blue and Silver 12's...but it still sounds killer. Players like Brian May, Ry Cooder and David Lindley love it...and so do I. Personally, I would trust Brian May, Ry Cooder and David Lindley's opinion. Lew
