Speaker for a home made 1 x 12 pine cab

Scott_F and many others helped me with the plans and choice of materials for a 1 x 12" cab. It is now finished.

Once again, thanks so much guys.

The cab is 18" x 24" x 9" deep (outside dimensions) virtually clear pine with a 1/2" floating baltic birch baffle. NO tolex, I'm leaving it natural.

Now, I need to choose a speaker.

I play mainly blues and blues rock. (Strat and 335 copy...not that it matters).

It will likely never be driven by more than 50 watts at the very most.

What are your suggestions?

Dave

Vintage 30 will be quite nice in that. Its a 60W speaker so as long as you don't go above the 50W you stated it should be fine!

i wish i could help .... but as it is, i will be reading with interest as i am embarking on a speaker quest myself ...

is it closed back?

what is a floating baffle? .. and what are other types of baffles and how do they differ from floating?

also, are you looking for it to be powered by a 8 ohm output? or other?

I would say look at Weber speakers. Something with an alnico magnet would be interesting in a pine cab. Weber speakers are a great value.

I just ordered an Eminence "Red White & Blues" speaker, I will let you know how it sounds when I get it hooked up. Not trying to hijack, but I'll be running a single 12" in my cabinet, perhaps it's a dumb question, but I was wondering how I wire it? The cabinet I got uses a standard switchcraft input jack...do I just connect one wire to each speaker terminal then solder to the jack and its good to go?

pretty much, but you need to be mindful of polarity ... make sure you know which of the jack terminals is supposed to be + and which is supposed to be - .. i think there is a "9Volt battery test" that you can find info on that helps you know which is which ... good luck

It is a bit like asking us to choose a spouse for you. All you really indicated is you are hetro here. So there are a lot of great speakers here. I like the Cannibis Rex. The V30 is nice as well. The Various Fangs, and the Weber equivalents are great options as well.

based on your amp... small tweed, right?

weber 12A something or another.

Thanks for the responses.

I intend to finish the cab with Danish oil/penetrating oil finish.

T4D: I'm not going to close the back at first, maybe experiment with through time. You might want to consider making the cabinet deeper than 9" (like 12" for a "bigger"/fuller tone..I went smaller to keep the weight down as one cab is for a friend who has lifting restrictions due to a chronic back condition ...also, I had 2 identical cabs made by a close friend who is a woodworker and I wanted to keep his life simple).

A floating baffle is a baffle attached to the cab on only 2 sides .

The impedence will be 8 ohms...sorry, forgot to mention.

I will be putting a speaker in the cab (on loan from a friend)for testing soon and will convey the results to the forum.

What other information do I need to indicate to help you to be more able to suggest a speaker ?????

Scott, I'm going to be using it with a small tweed, but might use it as an external speaker with friend's amps, etc

Thanks

Dave
