Speaker for Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I would really like to get a new amp but i really don't have the money for something really nice unless i could find a sweet deal. So, i thougt that for the time being i could just replace the stock speaker. Don't get me wrong i don't dislike the stock sound, but it could be a lot better. So, recommend me a speaker. I have been thinking about the celestion vintage 30 although i have heard people say that it is too harsh for fender amps. I also looked at the eminence red, white, and blues as well the eminence swamp thang.

What kind of sound are you looking for? I've used a V-30 in tandem with the stock speaker in my HRD. With the V-30 I got some nice Rock tones. Nice crunch on my power chords and my leads cut though nice. I never tried it alone in the HRD, So I can't comment. One of the selling points for me in the HRD is the 4 ohm tap. My HRD sits on top of my 2x12 cab perfect! if I need to move some air. I play mostly Blues and Blues based rock. If I had to replace the stock speaker? I Imagine I'd go with a Texas Heat. I have a TH in my 2x12 and I find it to be a very versatile speaker. Kinda the best of both worlds IMO. You retain the Fendery chime, But the speaker has some bite to it.

My neighbor is a bit of a speaker junkie. He has spent A Lot of time with the Fender HRDx and Peavey CL30. With the Fender he settled on the Emi Tonespotter and the Emi GB12 for the Peavey. I would say that he spent a good month trying 8 different speakers in his Fender.

Listen to the sound samples on the Eminence website - maybe you'll find something you like.
I don't think that Celstions would be to bright for a Fender amp.

I think the RW&Bs is really warm and thick sounding....might be too much so for the HRD...

I love the V30 as do many, many players and I don't hear the v30 as being to harsh for Fender amps...but I do like the Celestion G12H30 even better. More bass and mids and smoother treble. Go for the G12H30.

This is may not be what you want to hear this but this is what I suggest from by my past experience. It might be cheaper. First the amp is killer. Good distortion and that clean fender tone is great especially with a little reverb. 40 watts is good for alot of applications. But remember, it is still a tube amp and the guts do wear out. I would take it to a reputable amp tech and let him look under the hood and see how the tubes are holding out. Caps may be starting to go depending on the age or usage. My point is.... make the decision after you feel the amp is working at peak efficiency before spending the additional $$ for something you may not require. The bottom line is that while different speakers provide another layer of variance of tone, they can only reproduce what the amp circuit can provide. The amp must be be working at it's fullest to get the best tone after allamp tone is a subjective thing. Think about this. If Fender (or any other mass produced amp manufacturer) used high quality preamps , tubes etc in the amps they would have to increase the price. Significantely. They would not sell. But.....
The Eminence speaker is not bad as it stands, but you wouldn't go wrong with a Celestion Greenback or a Weber. Have fun and good luck

Well i played the fender supersonic wich has a v30 in it and it sounded really good to me. The g12h30 is only thirty watts though.

DO NOT get the red white & blues, it sounds horrible

swamp will be like the speaker now but darker mids, way more bass, and some less highs

if you're worried about the shrillness, emi governors are like 75 watt v30's without the high mid spike

and personally i wouldn't go for a speaker less than 60 watts, those things are louder than the 40 they claim

the governors look good. it seems like they do a good job handling overdrives, but i need a great clean sound as well. Can these put out rich clean sounds?
