Re: speaker impulse buy

I'm not sure of the "k" designation, but I heard an old Deluxe Reverb with a JBL in there and it was killer.

Re: speaker impulse buy

i think the D120 is the more common one that you find in smaller Fenders. I saw a Twin that had 130 series JBL's for sale. When I get my hands on them, I wil have a better idea of what they do. The guy I bought them from was apparently playing musical speakers with his Blockhead 50 watt and 2x12 cab, so I might be able to stick them in a 2x12 and get something resembling an ABB sound with my Marshall.....or stick one of them in the Deluxe and pair up the other one with the 8 ohm G12H30 Heritage i have in the closet. I'm a bit worried that it might be too much speaker for the Deluxe, but we'll see.:fingersx: Might be an interesting combination with your Edana, Scott. From what I have heard, the problem with JBL is, unlike some of the modern Celestions, the new JBL's ain't even close to the old ones, so if you want a real JBL and not an Emminence, Mojo, Weber, etc., you are kinda stuck buying the old ones. But like the headline says, pure, dumbass impulse buy...lol

Re: speaker impulse buy

I belive you are talking about a JBL K-120. Those are not the "classic" JBL speaker that ws used in BF Twin Reverbs but Im pretty sure they are still kind of close. HUGE bottom end and sharp high...it should have a metal dust cap, 4 inch voice coil and a magnet big enough to cause back problems! JBL says they can be used as bass speakersa, guitar speakers or even in PA bins for PA use. The only person I know of that used them in a guitar amp was Pete Townshend and only for a short time.

As for what to do with them, thats up to you...they need a pretty stout amp to be pushed enough to have a good tone and due, in part to the aluminum dust cap they get very harsh and fizzy under even mild gain settings but a lot of guys love that JBL tone in their Twin Reverbs.

hmmmm.........all of the JBL's i have seen in use recently, including those that Dickey Betts and Dan Toler were using, had the aluminum dust cap. And yes, you are correct, Christian......they are the K120's. By the way. I ws looking at your signature an noticed that you have a CS Vibrolux. Is that a PCB or hand wired amp and how do you like it?

Re: speaker impulse buy

I thought all D130's were 15". I was actively looking for one for my Tweed Pro and Ted Weber told me he had a few old one laying around that needed a re-cone. I picked one up for a stupid cheap price. Darn glad I did. If I ever build another Evan-Rude, I'll probably make it as a Vibroverb style 1x15. That speaker was more amazing with eVan's amp than with the tweed pro (which is still darn good).

Re: speaker impulse buy

From my experimenting, the k120 adds a little more color to the tone, as compared to to a jbl d120f. It is a very nice speaker, just a matter of taste as to whether you like the tone or not.

Re: speaker impulse buy

Back when I played in R&B bands in Detroit in the 70's I used a pair of the K-120's in a speaker bottem powered by a Musicman HD130 head. I grew to hate both pieces of equipment. But I think it was the head I disliked most. The bright crisp clarity of the K-120's brought out the worst qualities of that sterile sounding, soulless semi solid state/semi tube Musicman amp. But I thought the speakers were a bit "unsoulful" too and from then on I've used Celestions or old Jensens exclusively when it comes to 12's. Lew
