Speaker odysey

With Marshall JCM 800 2204 head i tried so far now speakers:

Vintage 30... not impressed
G12H30 Anniversary... impressed, but not my cop of tea
G12T-75... just not the right speakers for my taste

So, i decided as i liked Heritage 30, to try out Greenbacks, four of them in a Marshall 1960 A.

I have two Vintage 30, and they really go well with my other tube head Randall Diavlo RD 45. it's the perfect match. but as i say i want to try four Greenbacks, and i will try it through those two heads. i think i'll settle down on one 2x12 cab with two Vintage 30's, and on one 4x12 cab with four Greenbacks.

I ordered two Greenbacks for the begining, and i will mix them with Vintage 30's.

I have two G12T-75's and one G12H30 Anniversary now to sell.

I hope that will be the end of my speaker odysey.

I will report my results with Greenbacks and JCM 800 2204 head when they will be broken in. at least 20 hours of loud playing, yes i know.

I am really happy to find out that Vintage 30's go very well with my Randall Diavlo RD 45. i also hope that Greenbacks will work well with that head too.

I liked the combinations of speakers together, but i wanna have seperated speakers of one or two choice.

I like to play electric blues/rock, and heavy/thrash/groove metal with lots of solos and different parts in it. i plan to keep some new band together in future, but it's hard.

Re: Speaker odysey

if you can, you should try some G12-65s too. they sound great. Sorta a higher powered, tighter, punchier, less squishy version of a greenback.

Re: Speaker odysey

Actually i am thinking about putting all 4 vintage 30's in Marshall 1960 A... i am sure it would be fine with my Randall Diavlo RD 45 tube head, but i have a doubt that that's too much. what would be better: 2x12 oversized with two V30, or 4x12 with four V30 ? it's a 50 watt head. it has pretty good sound at low levels, which i like a lot.. but then however i have JCM 800 2204 head, that i really don't like it with those V30. and marshalls 50 watt heads sucks at low volumes. so i think it would be good idea to have marshall with greenbacks, and then Randall with V30.

But i am having a problem find a good empty 2x12 cab. maybe i could order some custom 2x12 at tubetown.net but that is obviously the last choice to do..

The Greenbacks i ordered haven't yet come, so i can't say nothing about it.

Re: Speaker odysey

I hate to not being able to use just one 4x12 cab for both heads... but it seems those two heads are completly different animals, so i will have to got some 2x12 cab for Randall. I hate that but it's the only option, since really i don't want to mix speakers together.

Re: Speaker odysey

I think the Greenbacks would be fine with Marshall, since they have 98 db each, so i can drive them harder, plus they are warmer sounding, which is good for Marshall.

On the other side i already know that V30 are great with Randall, they are 100 db each, and i think two will be enough.. because i need good sound at all volume levels, Randall is more practical amp now for me. but Marshall is the amp i would not sell for nothing.. it's just epic.

But, as i said, i hate to have two seperate cabs.

There are other options besides Celestion, ya know. :)

The laws of acoustics (and physics) state that with 2 sounds sources of equal amplitude and equal phase, your total increase is only 3dB. So, 2 speakers playing at 98dB will give you 101dB. However, I doubt very much that you are playing even close to 90dB, unless you have the space to really wind up the '800. So, 4x12 will really round out the tone, even if they are high efficiency.

On the inverse, for every 3dB of increased sensitivity, you gain an equivalence to doubling your effective wattage. So, speaker efficiency can be a great tool for dialing in your ideal overall SPLs, though you should be looking at tone first and not just number crunching.

Re: Speaker odysey

It might be unorthodox but I run a 2x12 with a Cannabis Rex and a Texas Heat with my 800 based amp and it sounds incredible.

Re: Speaker odysey

I love Celestions, but their G12 breakdown is difficult to follow. They've got G12M, G12M Heritage, G12M-65, G12-65 Heritage, then there's G12H, G12H-75, G12H-55, then the Vintage 30s, the V30 and V30 Anniversary. And they do have slight differences between them all, but each sounds like the same core speaker with some kind of subtle EQ'ing from one to the next.

Re: Speaker odysey

I'd like to have 2x12 vertical angled cab with two Vintage 30 for Randall Diavlo 45 Head.. then i can just fill up my Marshall 1960 Angled cab with Greenbacks and use it for JCM 800 2204 head.

I think i'll probably order one custom empty 2x12 from TubeTown, since no one there in my country build custom cabs. but if finances will be.. if don't the other option is four V30 in 1960 A.

I think that option 2 is bit more affordable for me . we'll see. greenbacks didn't arrived yet. to be honest i really don't believe they will.....

Re: Speaker odysey

Ok, for now i played Randall Diavlo RD45 head with those combinations: V30 and H30 ( a bit dissapointed.. ), G12T75 ( 2x ) not good sound at all... i played then through just one G12T75 a little better but yet not enough balls. the only good speakers for that head are two Vintage 30 together or one Vintage 30 alone. the best is 2x12 Vintage 30.

So, i let my 4x12 cab that way today: on the left side two Vintage 30's... on the right side two Heritage 30's. i run that cab the most of time in stereo mode.. so i have now, two V30, and two H30 seperated in stereo options.

For now, i have enough of tweaking those loud tube heads. my ears are just bleeding and it's time to go to Roland Cube, and start learning some songs i wrote, and do some covers.

On the other side, Blackstar HT-5 goes very well with G12T-75 speakers..

I think i am gonna try Marshall JCM 800 2204 with two G12H30's and then decide. if i would play only Randall Diavlo i would just fill that cab with two more V30's and i am ready to go. but there' s JCM, and i wanna... ****. i will do that JCM thing again, but later. now i have enough of tube loudness for a week or two.

However i am going closer and closer to the right setup configuration for some band situation.

Now the learning process shall begin.

See ya later !
