Speaker q's. Which ones "+" ?

I have two old Gauss speakers from the 70's that I'd like to try out today. The terminals on these speakers are the type that you push and feed the wire thru. One terminal is red and the other is black and neither is marker "+" or "-". I can only assume that the red terminal is the positive but again, I'm just assuming. Any sure way to know which is which? Thanks.

The red should be positive but do the 9 volt battery test...

I've heard of that test but am unsure how to do it. Could you fill me in?

Touch the positive from the battery to the positive terminal of the speaker and the negative from the battery to the negative to the speaker when both positive and negative touch the speaker will make a very quite poping sound and the cone will move a little...if the cone moves out then you do in fact have positive to positive and negative to negative...however, if the speaker cone pulls in you have negative to positive and positive to negative.

Does that make sence?

Uh...I thinks so. Sounds like I'll need to cut some wire to connect to the battery terminals so I can hook it up to the speaker terminals. right?

Yeah...if the speaker terminals re not close enough together they you can use wire.

Okay, thanks a lot! I have to go out for a while but I'll try that later on. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

If the speakers don't move at all then the voice coils are popped.

Good luck!

Well, the battery test worked just fine. The speaker made a slight "pop" and the cone moved upward which told me the red terminal was positive. Sounded even better once I installed it into a cabinet I made for my DRRI. I use to use these two, 12" Gauss speakers with my SVT that I recentley sold back in my bass playing days so needless to say they're good and broken in! Thanks again for the help. I can always count on the good folks here!
