Re: Speaker questions here?

Post here. I used EVM12Ls back in the 80's - heavy muthas, but great sound.

Re: Speaker questions here?

I've seen and tried many different "incarnations" of the EVM12L and I like 'em...especially with a Music Man amp.
I have identified the Zakk Wyled models (haven't tried those), Series II (don't like them) the Classic reissue (they're not bad) and a model referred to as The Pro Line which I have not tried.
Does anyone know how to identify, for certain, the OLDER model introduced back in the 1980's?
2nd question, I've got one I bought on "the bay" that has the low end punch and clarity and it has a raised section on the back plate that is against the magnet. The magnet is also very thick...almost 3/4 of an inch. The raised area is about the size of a small bagle and is "bulged up" about 1/4 to 5/16 inch. Anybody know what model that might be?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Speaker questions here?

Eminence makes a copy of the EV12l priced about 1/2 the cost;

The EV12l can be used in closed or open back cabinets.
Famous clean tones and full distorted sound.
EV now makes a reproduction of the discontinued EVM12l called the "CLassic". priced at about 200.00.
They also make a higher wattage ( i believe) version of the EV12l Named after Zakk Wyldes Band.
I have one EV12l in a 4X12 cabinet, and would like to get three more eventually , but I want one more for the time being.

How to identify the seriesII?

Re: Speaker questions here?

I believe the Pro Line speakers were simply normal EVM's without the fancy paint and magnet covers. They were plain-jane-looking speakers for OEM applications.

I could be wrong that those were called "Pro Line", however, I'm sure they were available plain and in the fancier trim you got if you bought a boxed EVM over the counter.

Re: Speaker questions here?

The Series II has that nomenclature on the lable that covers the magnet. Most other EVM12L's have or had a large, finned heat-sink that most players remove to save space and weight. The Series II and Classics do not have this heat sink. My calls to EV were not much help in identifying the one I have that has the raised center in the magnet cover...it looks somewhat like a Wylde but is much older...however, that particular 12L sounds fuller, louder and has a huge bottom end that the Classics I have or the others I bought that were advertised to be the "original" model do not.

Which EV is THIS one?(its like the one I have);

Re: Speaker questions here?

Judging by the bevel on the magnet...it looks like either a Classic reissue or a Series II...either one without a lable, but, I am not certain. I may remove the label on my Classic and see if there is any printing on the mag like the one you have pictured.

Well, this is the original speaker in a early 80's amp, so it wouldnt be the reish.
Hope it isnt the series II.

Re: Speaker questions here?

Jerryjg...if that was in an '80's amp then, according to EV, it is an "original" EVM 12L. That is the 12L that many players find to be "the one".
It could be, like Rich stated, that EV sent out different looking 12L's depending on what they were put in or how they were sold.

Yours doesn't look line a Series II and the "Classic" reissue has a magnet that looks different altogether...its got that "bulge" that is somewhat like the speaker I am trying to identify.

Thanks to one and all for the input.

Re: Speaker questions here?

My Series II looks identical to this one. It came from an '83 Fender Concert II amp cab.

It says "Series II" in smaller letters under the letter "M".

Re: Speaker questions here?

I had some force EVs that were kinda neat... but my brother punctured the paper with mic stand...:( when I went to replace them (they were going to go in my earcandy buzbomb) I ended up getting earcandy green machines.... awesome speakers does everything the force did but better and punchier! They are made by Tim too at his shop and are pretty cheap!

This link will take you to a pic at the top of the page, which is also in the body of the page among the other speakers. They are saying that the one pictured is a 300W model. I have heard of the 300W models, but I never have seen the 12L like the one in the pic.
