Speaker recomendations for TW express

Hey guys,

I am going to build my own cab for the amp, and I have to choose the right speakers.

I am thinking of making a set of Celestion G12H 70th Ann. and Eminence Red Fang. The idea of having an Alnico and a Ceramic magnet together is something that I really like, since I want to have complexity of tone. I like warm fat tones... I know that both speakers get great reviews, but will they be suited for this amp?

I play blues-rock mostly. What do you think?

The cabs are going to be two large 212 cabs.

What do you recomend guys?

Thanks a lot!

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

If you can find them, I HIGHLY recommend Celestion G12-65s !!!!!

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

Are they hard to find? I found a couple of on-line shops which stock them...

They seem to get rave reviews!

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

The old ones are hard to find here & pricey...if you have access to some, I don't think you'll be disappointed :bigthumb:

I've got a pair from 1981-82 or so & they're all creamy buttery smooth like bad a$$ !!!! :32:

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

I haven't tried them or heard much about them.....I'm sure someone will chime in here shortly; it's early Sunday morning.....I'm at work trying to stay awake....or wake up !!! :D

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

How much wattage does the amp have?

Trains are pretty complex beasts and to deal with them well I would see if greenbacks and the G12H mixed might be a great way to go. The GB will break up a little earlier and allow you to get decent amp OD without blowing the windows out of the house. The G12H is a very similar speaker so you may not get as much variety. I own a Komet 60 which is based on a Fisher circuit and Komet strongly recommends greenbacks.....all the clips on the Komet website were done with a vintage basketweave 4 12" with original Rolo greenbacks. Check it out before you decide.

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

It's fairly well known that Ken Fischer preferred early Greenbacks in 4x12 Marshall cabs.

you might also check into Scumback speakers, since he has spent a good deal of time and effort to re-create the accurate tone of early Celestions.

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

Thanks for the input everyone... I am not necessarily after the original TW tone. I just want a nice rich fat tone which will become mine.

I am checking out the sound clips from Komet and Scumback...

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

do you know which model express its modeled after? ive heard there are quite a few versions out there. im building a 'wreck fo sorts. i plan on using it with my 2x12 closed back loaded with a g12h/vintage 30.

i think the g12h/red fang combo would be cool too just make sure both speakers are in phase when wiring the cab

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

I didn't know that there were many circuits for the express.

I think that any combination suggested here is going to be cool to have the problem is finding which one I like and which one suits the amp best.

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

So making up my mind here after visiting the amp carage as well...

It's going to be:

either 4 "old greenbacks" scumbags.

or

H75 from scumbag (with red fangs maybe)

What do you thing guys??

my disclaimer: I'm not a speaker expert.

Ken Fischer liked the old Greenbacks in original Marshall 4x12 cabs for a few reasons. They were great speakers, which gave him a singing overdrive, and the 4x12 gave him enough power handling for the amp, and the Marshall cab was spacious enough to help with bass response that some say Greenbacks lack.

on my 'Wreck Rocket clone, I used a Celestion Blue/ G12H 30 in a 2x12 cab, so I agree with your original idea of having an alnico/ ceramic mix, although my amp is more of a Vox tone, and the Express is closer to a Marshall tone, IMO.
Still, the point is that the alnico speaker will break up nicely, and a G12H will help with bass response in a 2x12 cab. The Red Fang/ G12H combo would give you 60 watts power handling for a 50 watt amp -- so enough, but not a lot of margin IF you were running the amp wide open at full power all the time. I think you've said you will use half power a lot, so you'll be fine with that.

please note jeremy's comment if you run a Celestion/ Eminence mix -- I think they're wired differently, so you'll have to pay attention to your wiring to match phasing.

another issue is that I don't know what's available in Cyprus -- Celestions might be more affordable, and you might opt for a Celestion Gold in place of a Red Fang.

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

i have both the gold and the red fang both are great but the gold has more bottom and less top than the fang. over here the fang was half the price of the gold, not sure about over there. im sure a g12h and gold would be sweet together

Re: Speaker recomendations for TW express

Thanks Curly, thanks Jeremy... I will be ordering the speakers through a shop owner that I know, he 's a great guy and I have no problems getting anything from the US...

My only concern of this G12h / red fang combo is that the G12H might be too harsh. - or so i 've read!
