Speaker replacement - which celestion?

Hey guys,

interested in changing out the 12" speaker in a DSL 401- i feel the stock one is a bit muddy :blackeye:

anyhow, it has to be 16 ohm to replace it directly - i dont wanna have to worry about it in future.

has anyone fitted either a vintage 30 or a 16 ohm greenback aftermarket? im wondering how each affected the tone.

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

I may be wong as im no expert on this by any means, but i believe that greenbacks are only 25w, and given that your marshall is 40w, it would not be a good idea to put one in. On the other hand, the vintage 30 is 60watts and so would be absolutely fine.

What kind of music do you play?
I have a vintage 30 in one of my marshall cabs, and it is certainly not muddy - it has very good definition. If you go on celestions site (www.celestion.com i think) you can hear samples of each speaker

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

I put a VIN 30 in my DSL401. It didn't make a world of difference, the stock speaker is quite good on its own. I did, however, replace and re-bias all the tubes and that made a huge difference. If you really want a new speaker, don't replace the stock speaker, but buy and external loaded cab- either go to avatarspeakers.com or buy the Marshall 2x12. The closed back will make a gigger difference. Replacing the stock speaker with a VIN30 or similar isn't worth the money

I highly recommend a ceramic Weber Blue Dog. Great mids. You can get a 50w 16 ohm version for $95 new at Weber's site
Thames (SD forum member) sells Weber speakers also. He might be able to get a better price.

I really like the greenbacks for my amp also, but they are only 25 watts. I don't really like the v30, but many other people do.. It's all a matter of individuality, of course :D Also, I have not tried the v30 in a dsl 401, so I can't really make a judgement call on that particular setup.

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

I got that same amp and I was about to replace it with an eminence gb12 or V30 but I think it would make more sense to buy a 2x12 with greenbacks...mmmmm. thats what I plan to do.

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

v30's are pretty much known for their definition. But i agree, get another cab & e-mail the people at avatar & ask them to reccomend you a cab that'll balance your sound out, if you can afford it

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

You can pick up eminence GB12s for 49 dollars on avatar cabs. They are greenback copies with some upgrade IMO. They handle 50 watts and are extremely good speakers. I highly suggest them. Kevlar uses them as well and loves them. I believe there are some links to his clips on the avatar site.

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

Yup....and I have Kevlar's old set of V12's rockin the casa in my JCM 800. They are the bomb for that V30 flavor at half the price.

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?

cheers for the input guys, will probably look at building a 2x12, im in UK *sigh*

im playing a lot of clean stuff, and some low-medium gain rocky stuff- clarity and warmth are really what im after

and if it was 2 greenbacks, would sticking them in parellel be the best idea? the thought of a 'daisychain' failure and frying the OT makes me shudder!

and has anyone got a decent site on biasing a 401? the one i googled reccomended 1345 ma or something - did that, and hated the sound...

I am in the UK aswell, so i know the problems of getting the gear you want.
I would advise you to look for a marshall 1922 2x12 cab. They dont make them anymore, but they are fairly common on ebay, and go for about £140 or so. It is fairly light and compact for a 2x12, and they are perfect to go with combos. You get 2 celestion g1275 speakers in it. What you can then do is sell one of the speakers on ebay for about £30, and buy a vintage 30 for about £50. The combination of a v30 and g1275 is excellent and will give you great definition. So all in all, you will be getting a quality 2x12 cab with the right speakers for about £160.
This is what i did with my jubilee combo and it has worked a treat.

Re: Speaker replacement - which celestion?
