Speaker response

Most speakers I see have a pretty severe dip in the frequency response at 2-3K. Only Celestion seems to have a smoother, flatter response. Is that dip desirable in a guitar amp, or does the Celestion (Blue) blow most others away?

Re: Speaker response

This is why instrument speakers are different from stereo or "hi-fi" speakers. Hi-fi speakers are made to replicate the original sound, so they have a flat frequency response. However instrument speakers on the other sound are made achieve a certain tone. Just like with anything (pickups, amps, etc) all guitarist desire different tones. All speakers are different. As far as I've tried, Jensen speakers tend to have more midrange and treble response with less bass, and Celestions are typically a lot warmer. Also, Jensens are usually associated with Fender style amps while Celestions, etc., are used in more british type of amps like Marshalls, etc. Also warmer speakers can be used to tame brighter amps and also the opposite.

What you want from you're guitar amp is totally up to you and there is a HUGE variety of speakers so that you can find what is appropriate for you.

Almost all guitar speakers have that dip at about 2K. The Blue's dip is less severe, with an earlier recovery compared to most. Likewise the Vintage 30 has a quicker recovery from the dip similar to the blue, giving the preception of stronger upper mids. The V30 is basically a ceramic version (with higher power handling) of an alnico Celestion.

The G12H30 also has a lesser dip, and the dip comes at a higher hz, so it seems to have a lesser upper, but greater lower, midrange "spike".

I can't agree that Jensens sound less warm than Celestions. Maybe the re-issue Jensens, but the original P12N alnico Jensens are probably warmer and sweeter (certianly cleaner) than even the alnico Celestions, by my experiance.
