Speaker swaps: Texas heat, Swamp Thang, C90

Prayin' to Cheeses
I needed a 1x12 cab for a Marshall Artist 3203 I had kicking around, and ordered an Avatar Vintage cab. This marshall has some of that high-end harshness thing going, and I was looking for a speaker to offset it; plus I had been wanting to try a Texas Heat so I got it with one installed. Well, I a/b'd it with a Celestion C90 Black Shadow (in another 1x12) and was really disappointed; wet-suitcase kind of sound, very dark and muddy. Cleans were better but still not as good as the C90. I had similar results with my Mesa 5:50+.

I ended up swapping out the Texas Heat for a Swamp Thang. I think the cab sounds much better that way, for my application. The Texas Heat sounded great in the demos I heard but I think they take off too much dynamics and high end, and make this particular cab sound much darker and quieter. Probably would be exactly what some players would want, but I needed more chime and more crunch. It sounded pretty good in combination with the other 1x12; so I could see someone using them in a multi-speaker cab to bring out some richness and low end warmth. Or using these as a replacement for a vintage combo or cab that had really broken-in old school speakers. It also seemed less efficient/loud than the Swamp Thang or the C90, maybe the smaller magnet? dunno... The Swamp Thang is a *really* nice speaker. Compared favorably with the C90 Black Shadow; actually a little tighter on the low end and a bit less fizzy than the C90; but maybe not quite as big sounding overall especially in the mids.

Anyway, just wanted to pass on the info. My takeaways from this were 1) speakers *really do* make a big difference in your sound 2) You have to hear them in person; clips are only so useful

Now that I have personally experienced how much difference a speaker swap can make, I am debating whether I should replace my V30 based 4x12 with a Swamp Thang based 4x12, or maybe ask Mesa to make me one with C90s in it instead of V30s. I know many people love V30s but they are just not my cup of tea. Breaking them in and dinking with EQ has helped some but still.... bleah.

Re: Speaker swaps: Texas heat, Swamp Thang, C90

I tend to stick with Celestions, mostly because I know what to expect from each model, and almost everything they make sounds good.

With Eminence or Jensen, there's more of a gamble. Some of their speakers just sound too left or right of center. There's nothing worse than buying a $100 speaker, installing it, and being disappointed.

However, the Swamp Thang is one of Eminence's best speakers. It's fat, tight, loud, balanced, and tames shrill crunchy highs.

In a Fender, the Swamp Thang will sound bigger and fatter than whatever is in there. It's clean enough to retain the Fender sound, which is why it's a recommended replacement by many Fender gurus.

In a gainy amp, it'll sound percussive, fat, and sweeten the top end, removing fizz.

I have a 4x12 with two Swamp Thang and two Wizard speakers. Love the ST!
On my new album, all of the guitars on Part IV were done with the Swamp Thang, as well as about 1/3 of the guitar tracks in Parts I-III.

I have a 4x12 with a pair of Swamp Thangs & a pair of Texas Heats, and I've noticed the same thing. I also have a pair Governors and a pair of Man O Wars in another cab and that combo sounds much, much better than the ST/TH, although I have a feeling if I ditched the THs for a pair of Governors, I'd like the results.

Followup to this: a/b'd the C90 and Swamp Thang using my 5:50+; a little more thoroughly last night.

For this amp, and for my 4x12 replacement, I think I will go with the C90s. The C90 is just a bit saggier/squishier, and sounds a bit more gruff. Leads are a little smoother.

The Swamp Thang is really, really great though. It handled true "crunch" better. The low end was big and clear. It is (as others have said here and in other forums, etc.) a very *true* sounding speaker. The cleans were bright and clear but lacked some of the smoothness of the C90. Some of this may be due to lack of break-in time.

The C90 has more "flavor", to my ear. That might be good or bad, depending on what you want. More breakup/sag on the bass makes for a more stoner-ish vibe that I ended up really liking after all.

So now to decide whether I should order the C90s and swap them for the V30s myself, or buy a new cab with C90s and sell/trade in the old cab. Either way I am out a bunch of dough.

Re: Speaker swaps: Texas heat, Swamp Thang, C90

I just ordered a 4x12 cab from Mesa with C-90s. When it shows up I'm gonna get a 12 pack of beer and a/b that sucker with the cab with stock V30s. The loser gets traded back to my dealer towards a mini rectoverb...
