want to update speakers in my carvin 4x12 to make it great.. would it be cool to run an x pattern of greenbacks (or eminence private jacks) and vin 30s (or eminences copy)?

Looking for a good rock and 80s metal cab tone..
any other suggestions??

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

80's = G12-65 loaded 4x12
G12H30s work better with V30's than GBs for mixing. The V30s have strong upper mids and H30s don't, but not like they are scooped. The GBs are more mid heavy (actually less bass and treble) so its mids on mids mixed with V30s. v30s are also louder than GBs but not H30s.

G12T75s are way scooped in the mids so they also mix okay with V30s. V30s are still louder

V30s are louder than GBs unless its the chinese versions which are slightly louder than the older GBs.

I have gone to 4 GBs in my 4x12. GBs once broke in are perfect in 4x12s without mixing in other speakers IMO. The G12-65 is a lot like a GB with later breakup.

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

Make sure each type of speaker's sensitivity is not more than 3dB off from each other, or one pair will be noticeably louder.

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

What speakers are in there now and how old are they? For a sound change you might want to keep two of the Carvin's and add two others. Carvin has always shopped out their speakers to big name makers so don't think your current units aren't up to snuff. I've got an old cab with the 100 watt British Series units and it sounds like it's loaded with 75's. I'd never think of changing it.

good info! keep in mind, I KNOW NOTHING about speaker changes and such. The only speaker change Ive ever done is I swapped the stock PV speaker out of my classic 30 and put in an Emi Private Jack. What a HUGE difference! much better, but, its almost too wooly sounding.. Im thinking bout something else..

thanks all for the input!!

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

I use Celestion G-12K's in my Mesa Triples. IMO the best metal speakers on the market right now.

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

still voting for the neodymiums to save you 30 pounds of speaker weight. I want the eminence tonkerlites.

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

I like a mix of V30s/G12H30s in a 4x12 for 70s Rock and 80s Rock/Metal.

I'm actually trying to get close to this tone for my 2x12 but 1xV30 and 1xG12H30 doesn't give me enough power handling for a 100w head :(

I'm trying to decide whether to go with a mix of Eminence Governer/Wizard or wait for the higher powered G12H30 that Celestion are releasing sometime early this year.

My 4x12s are loaded as such.

Celestion T75/V30 mix
Celestion '70's G12M "blackbakcs"
Celestion '70's G12M/G12H30 mix
Scumback H75/H55 mix

I have two other 4x12s, but they have alnico speakers in them. My 2x12 has Scumback H75s in it.

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

The V30 H30 X pattern is an awesome combo for metal (or any style really). The speakers complement each other perfectly filling in the sonic gaps the other one misses. V30s have a big mid push and H30s are a bit scooped with a bigger bottom and brighter top so when you mix them you cover all bases.

what are H30s?

Are your Scumback H75s in the 2x12 the 65 watt versions?

Who makes scumbacks??

XSSIVE is referring to the G12H30 reissues (not to be confused with the Heritage or vintage model)

Scumbacks are built by Scumback (no longer by Weber as of over a year ago)

Re: speakers in a 4x12?

Scumbacks are boutique G12M25 green back or G12H30s. It's much like boutique PAFs but for speakers. They are either M's or H's. M for medium magnets or H for heavy magnets, the same as the Celestion originals. The number after the M or H is the resonant frequency instead of power handling. H75s are are their take on the G12H30 with 75 hertz resonant frequency. The nice thing about Scumbacks for my needs right now is that you can get an G12H30 or a Greenback that can handle 65 or 100 watts. Thus I can build a large cab 1 x12 that can handle a 50 watt amp but has the tone of an G12H30 cab. This is why I'm interested in them.

You can also get the speakers with a large dust cap like the 80's G12-65. So you could order M75s with a large dust cap to get into that 80's G12-65 loaded 4x12 vibe.
