Speakers lighting up when played what's up?

Okay so I am a bass player. I have a ampeg 410 cab with a GK 1001 rb. My Rhythm guitarist was playing through it with a high gain distortion peadel and it looked light my speakers were lighting up around the edges of the speaker. I'm guessing that this is not good. What or why is the question. Too much gain or signal? Overheating?

Sounds like it has some kind of light bulb-based protection circuit. Does your cabinet have a horn? Fast forward to 2:40 on this video.

I had no idea on this. That is a good idea that makes sense. A basic load dissipating circuit using light bulbs.

Back in the day (let's say ca. 1995, if that can be considered back in the day), I occasionally ran sound at a club that had a Community sound system with similar light bulb protection. The goal was always to get them up to just about when they would start to light and then back it off a bit. I remember one time...things got out of hand and one particularly loud moment was like shafts of light breaking through the clouds...sort of awesome, ha ha ha.
