Speakers to mix with 2 vintage 30s in a Mesa oversized cab?

I have Mesa cab with vintage 30s in it. I was wanting to replace 2 of them with 2 higher wattage (clearer) speakers with more bass, clarity. What kind and make speakers should I get? Where should the new speakers be placed? On the bottom or diagonal?

I'd go with G12H30's and experiment. You could put one pair on top and one pair in the bottem then listen to the cabinet on it's side and upside down to determine what placement you prefer.

Then you can remount the speakers in the positioning you liked best with the cabinet right side up.

I played a Vintage 30 paired with a EV 12L in a Marshall 2x12 cab and it romped. The EV took care of the clarity in the highs and lows (tons of clarity) and the V30 filled in the mids. The EV is rated at something like 200watts, so it'll handle plenty of power. The only downside is that it is very heavy, due to the big magnet.

Are those Celestions? Are they 30 watts? What do you think of Eminence v12s? Are all new Celestions made in China? I have a friend with 2 75 watt celestions in his 1990s Marshall slant that he wants to trade me. I dont know what type they are though. Do you?

i also like the v30/g12h mix, they compliment each other well and both have the same sensitivity so one doesnt overpower the other. the g12h is a 30w celestion.

the 75w that your friend has is a g12t-75 a good speaker with a big bottom and strong top, been stock in 1960A/B cabs for a long time. not as loud as a v30 so youll hear a little more of the v30 character.

Is there a 75 watt version of the G12H? for less breakup?
Arent the vintage 30s 30 watts?

Doesnt Bogner or someone do that with the speaker mixing? What do they use?
Are Eminence speakers as good as celestions?

Go with an older Mesa Black Shadow EV speakers. I went with the Black Shadow C90 but if you want clear the EV is what you want.

the v30 is a 60w or 70w speaker. i think celestion says 60w, but a marshall 1960AV cab is rated at 280w. maybe has something to do with the fact that the left side of the pond uses 60 hz power and on the right they use 50 hz.

there are plenty of good speakers out there. brown soun, eminance, fane, celestion, jbl, ev ect...

Someone on another forum emailed them awhile ago about this. Celestion said they under rate them for 60w because they don't know what type of application they'll be used under (amp, cab, number of speakers, ect...).

They said that Marshall bumped the rating up because Marshall feels comfortable that they're good for 70w when used in a Marshall cab.
