Speed MechaniX practice thread!

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

I'm in!

Please god can we skip the exercises where you have to sing?

what matt said!!!

also, what i like about all this... the exercises are very well written, explained in detail and already useable.. not like others that just focus solely on technique and then leave you to figure out licks on your own.. those can be WAY boring.. these are already in lick/riff form, which keeps it interesting, as well as both developing tecnhique and expanding your lick vocabulary at the same time.

The singing/playing exercise sounds like a good idea. After all, you need to sing a note or passage in your head before you can make it happen on the guitar.

I could be wrong, but you seem like a far more accomplished 'speed' guitar player than me. This means that you'll get to that part of the book before me. Meaning, I get to listen to everyone else sing before I swallow my pride and have a go.

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

LOL

excuses excuses..

i neglected guitar too much in the past few months and it shows.. the left hand stamina is down the drain, as i cant h/o p/o for long periods of time at high speed, so it'll take me a while, because i want it to take a qhile.. i'm not rushing anything, so it can and probably will take me a very long time to get through the book.
if i start on metal lead guitar this time next year, it's gonna be a MAJOR acomplishment

Good point. The goal is to speed up your playing, not your ability to get through a book.

Being thorough and consistent is the key...and for you young'uns, getting hot chicks. :)

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

See Davey, I'm totally the other way around. My right hand stamina is way down. I can play all day with my left, it's the right that hurts. Those right hand stamina exercises in the book really stretch me. So far I have flicked through it and had a blast at the odd few, now I am starting from the beginning now a few more of us have the book.

(This is just assuming you're right handed like me)

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

yea i am.

i've spent a lot of time with the gilbert videos, trying to pick right. i've never had a problem with my right hand :P
the left hand accuracy leaves a lot to be desired though

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

Well, does this happen to you sometimes?

I played last night - Set 1 - and I couldn't play for s**t. Like my hands would not move. The day before I drove for 8 hours looking at a job site, my hands were cold all day yesterday, and so I think that my hands were just plain tired out.

Hope tonights session (Set 2) goes a little better.

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

yea it does... sometimes the fingers just dont want to move...

i wish i wasnt swamped with work right now =/

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

i'm starting as soon as i have free time for guitar. which should be some time next week.
the sooner the better... i'm up to my ears in these spreadsheets and i am seriously considering canceling it all after this last batch, cos it takes up all my time.

anyway... you guys can start, no need to wait for me, as i'll do it at my own pace anyway :P

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

Aw dude, you know afternoons just work better for me than nights. I'm old, I admit it. I played through "Set 1" this afternoon. Jackson, Splawn, no effects, just all the gears. I was playing well today. I think I'm just more fresh in the morning.

Discovery of the day: You know when you read these guys saying you need to slow down, break apart the pieces, work on them one phrase at a time slowly, and then put it all together? Well, go figure, they're not lying!

Exercises 9 through 13 are getting much cleaner today - but that damned trill exercise is still killing me. Sounds muddy.

The chix dig the flowing golden locks, eh?

Well, the chix on this side of the pond dig the short, balding, and "husky" dark-haired types. So, you'd be outta luck here.

in your dreams ;)
and yea.. i havent met a single girl that didnt complemet the hair and/or want to braid it.. only one had the honor of doing that so far hehe

anyway. back to the lessons.. i managed to squeeze in a quick half hour of matts Set1 and found one of my main weaknesses. the connection between my ring and pinky is sluggish and "lazy", so i need to improve on that and get comfortable in using it, before i move on
(just a bit of useless info.. lesson #12 is also found in paul gilberts intense rock I.. only diference between stetinas and his is, that gilbert pics every string skip .. in #12, you hammer on from E to G, gilbert picks it... i find the picking easier, but keep practicing the hammer on, cos like said, i need to build the strenght again and unplugged the pinky hammer ons cant be heard very well)

Question:
does anybody else have the problem of lifting their pinky too high off the fretboard? i got no probs with the other fingers, they usualy stay within 1/2 " off the fretboard, but my pinky just flies off for miles =/ i cant keep it it line

Yes! I was going to ask the same question. Whenever I put down my third finger, the pinky is off like a helium balloon. Just noticed it today. I really hope I can get control of that little guy.

+1 here. I have the very exact same problem. It makes doing pulloffs between the two difficult for me. I am working on it. However, I've always known this was a prob for me, but just now getting after it.

+1 again. I used to fret about it :laugh2: . But, I saw someone - Petrucci, Yngwie or someone like that doing it so I quit worrying about it. That, and well I just could never get it to behave - just one of those battles I decided to give up on and just make do as best as I can. If anyone has any suggestions, short of cutting it off, I'm all ears.

Re: Speed MechaniX practice thread!

LOL

i think cutting it off, would be a bit of a hindrance hehe.

oh wait.. i'm supposed to be working =/
