Mark...What about the 60 watt Vox Valvetronix amp? Has a wonderful switch on the back that goes from 1 watt, 15 watt,30 watt,60 watt? The amp is very versatile,has great tones,and is fun and very intuitive to dial in at any volume? I Love mine...I have the 120 watt stereo head version though..Just my ears,but the Line 6 Flextone stuff doesn't hold a candle to this amp!

Yes....I've read the same reviews about that amp also MRID...Good suggestion..That little Fender Deco Tone is alot of fun also...

Check out the valvetronix, I've compared em to the flextones and like em a hell of a lot better.
The cubes arent bad either.

Anyone have clips of the Valvetronix? I have never heard one. I was going with the Line6 b/c of the versatility. If the Vox sounds that much better...hmm. Besides, the ability to really cut the power section sounds great. Does that affect the tone much?

I tried the Flextone III and it has AMAZING heavy gain tones. I never liked the valvetronix for their metal stuff. The flextone do blues well too.
If you prefer cleans, go Vox. If you like to chugachuga, go flextone. Well that's how I see it...
But you have a POD2.0. So you should maybe not stay with modelling? I thought I'd get a flextone as well but then I got my POD and now I want a small tube combo.

In a way you're right....
The original VT series is better for clean and blues...
The newer VTX series does the grinding stuff better....I have the VTX series..Great stuff for a great price!

Yeah, Pierre...good points. I do have the POD but I very much dislike them in front of guitar amps...so I play this one into my mixer. I want an amp to jam on, but I need the versatility. I'd like an amp that can be heavy and clean, that's why I was thinking modeling.

I do think the flextone gains on the high gain stuff more than it loses on the cleans. I love the blackface modelling on the POD, I can imagin it's even better on the flextone. They're very much worth their money and have plenty of options, though the floorboard costs a lot unfortunately. I'd try one out. But stay there at least half an hour

i'd go with the deluxe. Awesome tone, clarity, sound reproduction, and simplicity will help you tap into yourself and rely on your hands and those tubes to do the talking. That's what happened with me and my bandmaster. Just made me play better and i found my style in the process.

The review I read said that when used at room level there was no real improvement, and that the tubes needed to be cranked to feel their benefits
It's the same reason why I won't get one of these unfortunately. I will try one though, and I advise you do too.

Try the Randall Modular tube stuff. Combos and heads can found on ebay for prices in your range. I love my RM 100........what a deal!

well for rock and metal i say find yourself a used peavey ultra plus head which is 120w 6l6 powered and came before the XXX which the XXX was based on...it also has a toggle switch to cut power in half for lower volume use. snag one of them and a 2x12 avatar cab and your set and can expand to a larger cab if needed and throw a switch for 120W if needed. i own an ultra plus and i love the thing...best bang for the buck amp ever and i'll never let mine go...good clean, nice crunch and monster gain if needed. it has a built in reverb and a handy toggle switch (loose, mid., tight) which contours the bass.

Best amp IMO for that much money is the Fender Twin Reverb. But it's not much of a metal amp.

I'm normally a tube snob, but my exception, especially for great tones at home playing levels, is this.....get a Vox Valvetronix AD60 head and matching 2-12 cab. StratDeluxer swears by them, and I play mine almost more than my expensive tube amps because I can get any tone I want at levels that my neighbors can't even hear.
Even tho it looks kinda retro, it gets the best highgain tones of almost any amp out there. Using the Recto model with any of the 3 OD models in front of it....it's GAIN city! Not to mention that the clean models like the Tweed, Blackface, and Vox models are really convincing. I'm spoiled by the fact it's got a variable wattage selector on the back, as well as a volume control on the headphone out....plus recording out. It's the most useful amp a person could own for home playing. I even intonate my guitars to the super sensitive tuner. Now, I wish ALL amps had a built in tuner!
