Spending $800 on an amp...suggestions?

Re: Spending $800 on an amp...suggestions?

I went with the Flex III XL myself.
I just felt it was more versatile.
It's like having a rack in a combo.
I'm quite happy with it.

I use it as a back up to my Rack and 4x12s.
As well as for recording, home practice, Jamming with friends, and side projects.
Beat having to go crab the big rig.

I think what some like about the Valvetronix is the added tube between the preamp and power stage. Gives it more of a tube amp feel.

Guys with the Flex will just add a Presonus tube preamp in the effects loop to add that tube warmth.
I myself haven't tried it yet.
I've actually been quite happy with the Flex the way it is.

Another thought, if you just need two channels and effects is the
Crate V series tube amps. They are a all tube amp with built in assignable effects.

What's wrong with the Hot Rod or DSL?

They're both too loud for the apt use. The HRDlx has a linear volume pot and just hitting 1.5 on the amp is too much volume, but much lower than that and you can't hear it. And the DSL, which sounds pretty good at high volume, just doesn't sound good at bedroom volume. For gigging volume levels, both sound fine and I'd recommend them to others.

If you want something that will sound good in the bedroom, and still be good in fairly high volumes, Im gonna so go modeling...the Vox is getting rave reviews fomr people I trust and the atocim amps look very good, if you already have a POD

Agreed....I went strictly to the Vox VTX because of the reviews....Everyone over on the FDP loved it also..

I have a Fender Blues Jr. and it's got a good tone and you would have some coin left over for some effects. ............Joe

Okay. So does anyone know if the VTX and VTH are the same model, but one is just the head? I don't want to get the eariler version as I definitely use high gain sounds as well. BTW, how does the headphone out sound?

The VT is the earlier model...The combo was open backed and had a better clean tone, but didn't grind as well and had some problems...

The VTX is the upgraded version with a closed back, new Celestion Neo-Dog speakers...Does the clean tone nice, but it grinds and projects better...Most of the gremlins and problems have been taken care of....

The head is just a VTX head and I own the 120 watt stereo version...Great stuff for the money...I fussy as hell with my tones, but I Love this thing!

Do you think the head would sound good thru my Marshall 4x12, or should I really get the Vox cab with the neo speakers?

Re: Spending $800 on an amp...suggestions?

I'd look for a used Rivera for that kind of money.

Re: Spending $800 on an amp...suggestions?

Why not an atomic amp for the pod and then an attenuator?

I was running mine through my Marshall V30 4x12 and it sounded great...I prefer a 2x12 cabinet though and so I bought the matching 2x12 cab for mine...But yes the Marshall 4x12 works great with the amp..

Re: Spending $800 on an amp...suggestions?
