Spent some time with a Vox Valvetronics

Re: Spent some time with a Vox Valvetronics

I have heard of people having resonance problems on the original open back combo Valvetronix amps (Ad60 and ad120). I haven't really had this problem with my ad-60 1x12 open back combo. I have heard that if you have this problem, try covering all the jacks your not using on the back of the combo, with tape or some kind of plastic cover. They make noise when air is pushed through them. Another problem, which my amp does have, is that the headphone jack can cuase the volume to suddenly drop off if it gets dusty or oxidized. I just push a jack in their a few times and it the speaker comes back on. I would say the jacks on the Vox's are overall not that great. But for the price I paid, $399, this amp has been alot of fun.

I haven't tryed plugging this Vox into my Marshall V30 4x12 yet,but I'd bet it would really rock...I'm dialing my head up through a 2x12 Celestion cab and so I've not tryed the 4x12 yet?

John, you probably said in another post, but what speakers you using in your 2x12 cab?

The stock Cyber Twin speakers...I think they are 100 watt Celestions?

Hey Mike,
Personally I don't think that the Tech21 can even touch the great tones that I was able to get out of the Vox. The Tech21 is good at what it does, but the versitality plus the great tones makes the Vox overshadow the Tech21, IMHO. In fact my buddy Keith is planning to sell the Trademark 120 once he gets his AD120vt head. He liked it that much and is a better judge in comparing the two.

how would you compare it to the Tech 21 you "babysat" for awhile?!

i know it has more "options", but what about general tone?!

Even though I've already sworn never again to the modelling revolution, you guys just about have me ready to throw away all common sense and jump back into the fire. :smack: Lots now on the valvetronix amps (I even had a 30 watter for a while, was very close to keeping it but a little too boxy sounding to me), but little to none on the Tonelab SE - anybody have experience with it?

You have to open up your mind and feelings on these types of amps,as the gap is quickly narrowing now on getting great tone from any of the companies that know what they're doing..

It's hard to beat this amp for all out versatility, lots of tonal options,a fun amp to play, learn, and tweak on,but the tones are pretty good also...If you have good ears and know how to dial up sounds into a decent cab, this amp has alot to offer...Does it sound "just like" A Marshall 69 Plexi on 11...No...Does it have alot of convincing tones to offer,yes....In spades!

Turn those knobs.....Treat this amp just like a regular amp...Turn the treble, gain, bass, master volume knobs..add an effect to it,crank it up etc..and be surprised...And the 120 watt stereo head is $600...

Re: Spent some time with a Vox Valvetronics

I just spent the evening getting started on a methodical way of programming all the Vox's channels. Since there's 16 amps, they put the Fender tones on the first 4, then the Vox tones, then the Marshall tones, and the last 4 are highgain.
I went through each amp, and found it's optimum sound for both strats and Pauls, which included dialing in certain OD models on many amps to make them more tubelike and dynamic. I stored them like this.
.1 1-4 Fender amps for Strat
.2 1-4 Vox amps for Strat
.3 1-4 Marshall amps for Strat
.4 1-4 Highgain for Strat
1 1-4 Fender for Humbuckers
2 1-4 Vox for Humbuckers
3 1-4 Vintage Marshall for Humbuckers
4 1-4 Highgain rhythm and lead tones for Humbuckers.

I think I'm going to enjoy this amp for practicing much more, now that all those channels are almost dialed in. Everytime I practice, I'll make further tweaks, just to get them perfect. I left off all the FX, except for mild reverb on some patches, so I can add that if I want, but never store them.

Cool...

Mine is set up as a practice/gigging amp....I have a mixture of all the different tones I need on two banks(8 presets)and then Bank 3 Preset 1 is a nice acoustic preset..

I need to be able to quickly access whatever tone I need and having a mix on 2 banks will make it easy. I have my presets written down on a little index card until I memorize where the tones are located...I also have all of my preset volumes pretty close to the same, but I use a pedal hooked up to my F/C for master volume control,so it shouldn't be a real issue for me...
