Had the same problem with my Express 5:50+. I had a spare new Mullard re-issue long plate 12 AX7 put it in V2 position (which functions like the V1 in most amps) and it cleaned right up! Ordered more Mullards and will be replacing V1, 3 & 4 with those too. Also read about a guy that fixed a similar problem by just replacing the 6L6s with new ones. I guess he had a bad one and was causing spiky distortions. Good luck!
