Spin the Wheel Vanna! I might have hit the Martin Lottery.

Well, a good family friend died a while back. I've known he had an old Martin of some sorts. Never really got to see it. His wife tells my mom and then to me via email that she has his old guitar. He told her a few years ago it was worth about 300 bucks. She wanted to know if I wanted to buy it.

I told her yes, sight unseen. I asked her if she wanted me to try to sell it on ebay, but she's pretty well off and doesn't really need the money, wants to keep it "in the family." I'm glad she said that because this old guy was like an uncle to me.

Hmm... I wonder what it could be. I know it's got a dark top on it like my D-15. (that'd be funny if it was a D-15, just what I need... two of them.)

I guess I might be selling my D-15 if so.

I'm really wondering now what it is. She's left it at my Mom's house and I can't get my mom to read off the model number until she gets home next week.

My grandpa died when I was a little bitty baby. My mom got one of his very old ( it has to be 1940's or 50's) banjos which she gave to me. It's not in very good condition and I have no idea how to play one. But anyway, when I went to Tenessee a couple months ago we hopped over to South Carolina to see my Grandma. She told me my mom's brother got the only guitar he had when he died and he told my grandma that since I was playing guitar now I could have it if I wanted it. She said it would probably be around the same age as the banjo. I know he mostly played Martains but she didn't know what kind it was. He only lives about 20 minutes away from me so I need to go and get that guitar. Maybe I'll be getting a Martin soon.

thats nice scott, the guitar wil have more meaning and abit of the guy in it. Just wondering on a side note, how is the 15 series? Is it all mahogony? Top included? I was curious because ive been looking at some martins but have yet to try the 15 series. They look all dark red in color on the website. How do they sound and play?

I wouldn't want a relative to die - and that's honest. What's so absurd? Seems completely logical to me. People over property.

Anyway, sorry to move away from the thread. Blessings for her family and if you get that guitar try and get some pictures.

That's pretty cool Scott. I think there's something special to passing an instrument along...I hope my kids "get" that when I'm gone.

I love Martin heirloom stories, and that's one testiment to the build quality

The D-15 I own has a darker tone to it. I love it. Very woody and earthy if that makes any sense at all. (talking tone into written words is difficult).

It lacks on the bright high end, so if you dig that in an acoustic, you'll need to pass on this series. (MF had a Spruce top version of the D15. seemed like a good match)

Again, I might have one for sale soon. Darn near untouched. I bought it when I was out of town several months ago and it sits very much unplayed in the closet. It's a real shame. shame on me.
