Splawn Clips

Hey guys,

A month or so back I came here looking for advice on how to get started on recording (before I just used an HD147, direct out) and got some good info. Anyways I've finally had some time to start recording with the Splawn and so far am pleased with the results.

but good tone, man!

Nice job, especially on the Test 2. I could "feel" the guitar right in front of me.
But... on the "In Flames on the Quickrod" it sounded like the guitar was down the hall and around the corner. (OK, I'm exaggerating, but yeah.)

3th3r, I really liked the 2nd test. I'm trying to figure out why the In Flames track sounds muffled to you. After comparing it to the original test clips it does sound a little less "right in front of you". I must be the mic placement. Anyways thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, it must be the mic placement as you said, or maybe just the levels? In the In Flames clips, the guitar sounds like it's a little far back in the mix.

Digging the tone, but it seems a bit loose for your style, no? It's got that rad modded Marshall crunch, but it seems a bit lacking in the sheer balls factor.

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. Loose? I'm not quite sure what you mean. I thought the amp sounding rather tight, at least in terms of percussiveness and responsiveness. Maybe you're referring to the tone? I know a lot of bands of this style use non-El34 amps but I've always liked the "marshall crunch" even for this style of music. I don't use a lot of gain (it's only half way up on the amp). About the balls factor, perhaps it's how I mixed it? I just had two tracks, each panned completely to each side. Maybe that thins the sound out. I'll experiment there.

Anyways, I appreciate the comments. You've got me thinking now. I'm gonna try some new things next time! Thanks!

3th3r, come to think of it, it might sound distant compared to the drums because of how I panned the guitars, completely to each side. The drums are straight down the center.

Thanks Jimmy! Splawns are amazing amps.

I went back to the mix and only panned each side 85% as opposed to 100%. It made a little difference. I think that helped some.

No problem.

I can't decide whether I like the Quick Rod or the Pro Mod.

What do you think of the quick rod so far?

I love the Quick Rod. When I was first deciding b/t the QR and the PM I talked to Scott and he told me that you can dial the QR to sound essentially the same as the PM, but not the other way aroudn. The EL-34s are a lot more versatile.

What kind of music do you play? I mean I play a lot of metal stuff and the Quick Rod suites me just fine (and it's supposed to be the less modern sounding one), but it can do hard rock, blues, funk, etc reallly well too.

Referring to the tone here, not necessarily the response. Can't judge that without playing it ;). My old Mesa used to feel tight as all hell when playing it, but the actual tone was really loose. I think this is the same sort of thing. Your tone has an awesome chew to it, but not much chunk, if you know what I mean.

You may try quad tracking it - that's what I'd do with that sort of tone. It'll thicken things up and really crush.

Thanks for the info.

I play a good mix a metal, like Pantera, Arch Enemy, Racer X, Symphony X, and Nevermore.

Actually, I'm pretty happy with my right, but there's just something about splwn, some kind of "mojo" those amps have that I've never really heard in another amp. More, is that Scott is a really cool guy; he hooked me up with a white Marshall MKII head box for my plexi head. It looks like Randy Rhoads' now.

Probably, I'll get a splawn one day, but I'm working on adding another cabinet to my rig, then going stereo.
