Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

Spent all day setting up my stuff after a recent move--wanted to post a quick clip of a Splawn modded 100w RI plexi.

I was pretty amazed at the similarities between what I consider to be an "AC/DC tone" and what I consider to be a "early EVH tone".

Gibson LP Std w/BBs. Just threw these down to show the tone--I know the playing is pretty poor but it gets the point across...

From the www.splawnguitars.com website:

The amp is transformed into a high head room four gain stage pre-amp design loaded with rich compression and sustain. The notes seem to explode off the strings in the same way as the early VH brown sound. This mod allows the amp to be extremely responsive to the guitars volume control and pickups. Rolling back on the volume cleans the amp dramatically and playing heavier gives it more muscle. We start with any four input or JCM 800 single channel without reverb and the new 1959SLP, 1987X, JCM 800 reissue models. After the mod all these amps will sound identical except for the power section of the 50 watt. We thoroughly check the amp out replacing all tubes to get the amp up to specs before we perform the mod. All components that are replaced are solder back to the circuit board to give the amp an inside factory appearance. The amp will have a footswitchable rhythm and lead mode, that goes from the Brown Sound to a modern high gain tone with tight low end response. A footswitchable solo volume boost to get you over the top of the mix during solo's. We do not add any extra tubes and there is no diode clipping circuit. The footswitch jack is located on the front or rear depending on which amp is used. The solo volume control is located on the front panel, taking place of one of the inputs. The footswitch will be a two button type without LED's to switch between modes and the solo boost. If you are interested in performing this mod on your amp, please call to discuss in more detail. It generally takes about two-three weeks to complete your amp after it has been received. Pricing is $350.00 including mod and two button footswitch.

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

The sound clip has digital clipping all over it ... you may want to back off the level and re-post it.

Not my choice of tone, but I can certainly appreciate it! :)

Yea I hear the clipping but really just wanted to see how the amp recorded and I found out that it is too bright. I am going to run another in the next few days to see if I can beef up the tone a bit & cut the top end some. When I do, I'll be sure to watch my level.

Any other comments on the tone itself? Do you guys agree that it's too bright?

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

It's very present. I didn't find it too bright (what is too bright, anyway?).
You may wanna try moving your mic off-axis ... (?)

Thanks, I will. The settings are bass 10, mid 6, treb 3, pres 3 so I hope the mic thing works--I don't have much room to move!

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

None at all ...

Hmm, I usually have the EQ on my JCM 800 set up as
Bass 2
Mid 3
Treble 2
Presence around 7

You have yours totally dimed!! I don't know that head, tho ...

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

I emailed Scott Splawn and he told me that the brightness issue would be taken care of with different speakers. Apparently he doesn't like the V30s at all. I'm also wondering whether I should change to KT88 power tubes.

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

That IS SOO bright. I like the overal character of the tone, but it's too bright for me. I think that's the V30s i'm hearing. Try something like a Celestion G12H30. I think that would smooth and get you even more of that Brown sound you're after.

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

Splawn does awsome mods, and is a really cool guy to boot. His shop is about a half hour drive from my house. I love the way his amps sound, and he builds some nice heads....and even nicer cabs!

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

Great playing... I love the "Ain't talking about love" intro. The only criticism I've got it's the amount of overdrive... There is a backgroung brown noise which makes it to loose clarity IMO.

Re: Splawn Marshall//Gibson clip

Oh man I love these amps. I also had a slight brightness issue using my Splawn into my old Marshall cab. Getting one of Scott's handmade X-pattern cabs solved the problem big time. Mine is loaded with 2 Eminence Man-O-Wars and 2 RedCoats. It sounds unreal! I'll never go back to Celestions after hearing these Eminence speakers.
