well, I'm gonna be getting a 4x12 soon, next tuesday I'll have about $400, but here's my question

is the quality difference from avatar to splawn really that big? I mean, i dunno how much the cab itself affects tone, my main concerns are projection, bottom end, and clarity

my 125's are kinda farting out on bass response, they can't handle all I want them to, and don't give quite enough articulation, so I'm going with an X pattern of 2 governors & 2 of the g12t75 copies

if i go with the splawn, later i plan to get an avatar 2x12 to set on top so i don't have to use my 1x12 to match impedance with the bassman, plus it'll look better

but, if i go with avatar, i can afford a full stack soon, which would, obviously, friggin rule, and give more head-level projection since both splawns & avatars are so short. Plus, the initial 4x12, i could get pretty quick


so, what do you all think? is the quality of splawn over avatar worth the sacrifice of 2 more speakers & the extra $300?

being someone who makes $100 or so a week, bang for the buck is ALWAYS an issue, but so is sound quality

This is a damn good question and I have actually tried neither BUT I do know the Splawn is right up there with Bogner in terms of cabs. A buddy of mine has a couple 2X12 Splawns and says they absolutely kill- and this guy used to play Bogner. The Avatar stuff looks great. I can't believe they are as affordable as they are... they have got to be best cab deal on the planet. I have never heard anything but good things about Avatar. My hunch is that the Splawn is probably a slight bit better of an overall cab. Bang per buck I'd say the Avatar wins hand down although the Splawns are also amazing deals considering they are really competing with Bogner and such.

Why do you need a full stack? Are you touring nationally or something?

Dude I can easily play in front of a few thousand people with my legacy half stack on an outdoor stage no less. You don't need a full stack. Do you have roadies that are going to move them around for you?

Man you have to start thinking PRACTICAL. Remember the bassman saga? I hope this isn't the same thing all over again. Get something that you can use, not something that'll make you look cool and/or your heros use.

no offense, but unless you're playing stadiums you don't need a full stack. When I play shows 90% of the time my 1x12 combo is what comes with me. More than loud enough and the half stack is a pain in the ass to move.

if you must get a half stack, spend the money on one good one. And to be honest, I'm thinking of even downsizing my rig to a 2x12 and getting rid of the 4x12.

since your a fender fan i'll say it like this...

avatar is like MIM fender...it works just fine for most but it's nothing special, it lacks some things and is made of cheaper parts and woods!

splawn is like master built custom shop fender....you're not going to get a better fender with better parts and woods and attention to detail!


there is a reason splawn cost more than avatar....no it's not the name, it's the quality! they are apples and oranges! that's why people compair splawn cabs to all the "tops dogs" in the industry and avatar is know to be a "great bang for the buck".

no one needs a fulls stack anymore in fact, a half stack is overkill these days. I jaust wanted to say that...as for Splawn vs Avatar Mike did a fine job of telling it how it really is!

splawn is like master built custom shop fender....you're not going to get a better fender with better parts and woods and attention to detail!

You normally get what you pay for.If Splawn could sell his more expensive and better quality cab at the price of the Avatar,I'm sure he would.. :wink:

Nah, I would have no need or desire for such things either. It's overkill.

I did make a suggestion in my earlier post, if you must get a 4x12, spend the money and get ONE good 4x12. Splawn would be a better choice given the two options although avatar isn't bad.

Mike and I have just had countless convos with drew over amp stuff since he came here. He asks a ton of advice and then goes and does the opposite anyway. Like the thing with the Bassman. You shouldn't buy an amp out in left field then try to mod it to reach a goal.

Nothing against you drew, you just need a starting point. If you want a head/cabinet at least start with one good 4x12 which is more than you'll ever need anyway. If for any reason you feel you need another, then get another avatar to put on top of it or something.

I'm not being rude or anything here, trust me. But just get something to play through and not spend so much time messing with.

I deleted my post because I felt it lacked any real helping substance...We seem to spend more energy cutting people down lately,then actually giving someone some real good info...I've posted less and less because of the negative stuff....I'm guilty of being a so called "know it all" at times and I take that as a compliment,but it's my own sarcasim that I try to keep at bay at times...

I think Drew likes to post and likes the attention,but I know he's pretty harmless and he's also helpful of others and I read alot of his posts to others..He's a pretty intelligent kid also.. :dance:

and mike i know i talked to you about this, i just wanted a second opinion, some people get biased with new stuff, you know?

where i live, i don't have access to a lot of things, let alone things i like, so i have to ask

I'll admit i want a full stack partially just cuz it looks cool, but as someone who constantly goes to hard rock shows, i love the bands with just bone crushing volume, and i set my own rig by the same standards

yes i remember the bassman thing, and I'm perfectly happy with my current one & the pod, but when my speakers are farting out, it becomes a problem, so, i figure i may as well squeeze about 7 more db out of my setup if i'm gonna buy new stuff anyways, as well as get a rig not so close to the ground, i like to play loud more than anything, my parents hate it, but i hate having to bend down to cab level to get the full effect

and like i said, i make $100 a week, that aint crap, if there's a TINY difference between 2 things, and one costs $300 more, I'm gonna go for the cheaper one, that's why i had to ask

Don`t let the reference to Avatar cabinets being like MIM Fenders sacre you. I`ve had my Avatar cab for about 2 years now it`s as solid as a rock and performs great. There prices and shipping time(usually only 2 to 3 days) can`t be beat. That said, I`ve never played through anything made by Splawn but with their reputation I`d bet it`s A++++ quality.

oh, i didn't mean it like that...in a bad way, just an easy way to compair them. i've owned several MIM fenders and never had a complaint (aside from vintage size frets hehe). just putting them in another "scale" to compair the cabs. a MIM fender can be a great guitar but it's not going to be a custom shop master built guitar no matter what you do to it. same with the cabs, and avatar can be a great cab but it's not going to be the same as a splawn.

After seeing the way Splawn builds their cabs, and seeing the quality of raw materials, I am completely sold. However, these cabs are more than most "bedroom" guitarists will EVER need. These are serious road ready, top level performance cabs. I was sold on buying an Avitar, and probably would have if I had not found the deal I got on my Marshall 4x12.

Avitar is a solid, quality cab that will more than suit the needs of 80% of all the folks here...period. Not in the same league with Splawn, but more than adequate.
