Split coil wiring help please!

Good evening,

I don't believe I've ever seen this topic in the guitar forms perhaps overlooked it . I modified my telecaster with P90 Soapbar neck position, and a hot rails type humbucker or bridge. Here is what I would like to do .

Position three the P90 by itself.
Position one the full humbucker hot rail.
Position two I would like the hot rail split to single coil operation.

My question is this, is it possible to do this on a three way blade without using a switch or push pull pot? I kind of doubt that , however I do not want to use a push pull pot, I would much rather use a simple toggle switch instead. Anyway can someone point me to a wiring diagram for what I am wanting to do? I certainly would appreciate it!

Re: Split coil wiring help please!

What you wrote seems possible on a 3 position switch.

I just want to confirm that you don't need the combination of bridge and neck pickups together. You could get that too if you use a 4 position telecaster switch.

There are better brains than I here, and I can't offer diagram, but this sounds totally doable, possibly on a regular 3-way but definitely with a superswitch.

Re: Split coil wiring help please!

P90 only / split Rails only / Rails only is possible with the CRL 3-way blade/lever selector switch (or its Asian eight contacts in line equivalent).

Neck / Both / Bridge AND the automated coil splitting is not possible with a 3-way.

There is an alternative solution. A regular CRL 5-way switch wired thus:
1) Rails only
2) Rails + P90
3) P90 only
4) P90 + split Rails
5) Split Rails only.

Re: Split coil wiring help please!

If you don't need neck/bridge together, just dedicate one side of the blade switch for pickup selection and other side for grounding out one of the coils of the rails. Do not bridge the two sides together as seen in most common blade switch diagrams. There are drawings for auto-splitting using a standard blade switch out there already.

Re: Split coil wiring help please!

Here is my take on what wiring should be used with a 3 position switch.
The Red and White wires from the bridge humbucker are grounded by the switch in position 2.

I suggest you probably want 500k Volume and Tone pots, as that is normal for a P90 soapbar pickup.
