Splitting 2 three wires humbucker with one 2 way toggel switch?

Hello im new here and thank you for having me !

I have a Fender american deluxe stratocaster HSH, and i wish to install a 2 way toggel switch that will split the coils on both of the humbuckers at the same time. Basically i want to turn the guitar into sss configuration with a flick of a switch!

The humbuckers are modern twin head and they have only 3 wires ( 2 wires and ground) i have no idea how i can wire it, i dont even know what kind of switch to get? ( on on , on off ?) I searched for diagrams all over the net but in vain. I would really appreciate any form of assistance, tip or advice on this matter. And thank you all for your time.

Unfortunately impossible. The series links of the humbuckers are already hard wired inside the pickups, so you won't be able to do any kind of splitting at all.

You can get new pickups that are 4 conductor, then you can do it with an additional mini toggle switch or a push pull knob

Huh?!?

I have three-wire pickups where the third wire is there specifically so they can be split. Parallel wiring is not possible, however.

Assuming your third wire is a split wire, you can do it by referring to this diagram:

Notice that each of the splits uses only ONE side of the 2-way DPDT (you can use either a mini toggle or a push/pull pot). Your split wire will do the job that the combined red & white wires are doing in the diagram. All you have to do to split two buckers with one switch is wire up one to each side. If you're doing a Strat, I'd suggest wiring them both to split to the North (slug) coil so that you can maintain hum-canceling in positions 2 and 4 like a standard SSS Strat would have (that's assuming your center pup is RWRP).

Oh ****! I misread! Ignore me!

I thought you said 2 wires, aka single conductor and ground.

^ There are two different types of 3-wire pickups. Some of them have the chassis ground as separate to the 2 coil wires.....the Trisonics are this type for example.

Agreed, and I almost mentioned that in my post but the OP seems pretty confident that it's a split wire so... :dunno:

Yep, I guess sometimes more info is informative, other times it just confuses.

Thank you for this usefull information. I just have a question, the wires from pickups are soldered directly to a 5way pick selector. Do i run a wire from soldered point on the pickup selector to the mini switch? Or in that case how can i manage to wire them to the toggel switch? Thank you

Re: Splitting 2 three wires humbucker with one 2 way toggel switch?

I really did not mention anything in my post about being confident its a split wire. However im pretty sure you got me confused with someone else ;)

Re: Splitting 2 three wires humbucker with one 2 way toggel switch?

Try it and find out:

Connect the third wire to one of the other two. You don't even need a switch; or a soldering iron, for that matter.

Basically the mini switch needs to go BETWEEN the pickups and the selector.

I apologize for misunderstanding. When I go back and look closer I see that I did indeed get confused by Gregory's post and assumed it was yours. What pickups are they and/or how were they hooked up before?

im sorry but i just want to make sure that i understand so i don't mess things up :D do you mean that i solder the wire from the pickup to the mini switch first, then i run a wire from the same solder point on the mini switch to the pickup selector ?

The pickups are Modern Twin Head Humbucking. and they have 3 wires one with blue, green and black and the other with yellow, green and black. The first two wires of each pickup are wired directly to the pickup selector in positions to achieve 1 is neck, 2 is neck+middle, 4 is middle + bridge and 5 is bridge.

Can you take a couple of pictures of where the leads from the pickups are going currently?

EDIT: another question, are you installing new pick ups or are these the ones that were already in the guitar?

Those are the pickups that i already have, i don't want to get a new pickups.
So sorry but its really very hard for me right now to take pic for the wiring. but if its helps i have the yellow and blue ones wired to one side of the pickup selector, and the green ones to the other side of the pick selector.

which would be the ones i use for splitting in that case ?

Does the current configuration have splitting coils as an option?

When in positions 2 or 4 we get the outer coil of the humbucker with the middle single coil pickup.
Dose that answers your question ?

Re: Splitting 2 three wires humbucker with one 2 way toggel switch?

It is quite easy to tell from the pictures that the green wires are for coil splitting, the black wires go to ground, and the blue and yellow wires are the hot leads.

No other pictures are necessary.

Thank you that sounds great! I would really appreciate a wiring guide or a diagram.
