SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

I've finally come to the stark realization that a tube amp is not reasonable for the volumes I play at. I only play at home and would like an amp to use for sparkly clean tones that I can use my effects on. I play blues/jazz/mellow alternative. I'm just looking for a believable clean channel and an amp that takes pedals well. I also don't want to spend over $200 and will be willing to go used. Feel free to ask for clarification...I know nothing about ss/modelling.

Edit: So far I've run into the Tech 21 TM 30/10, Roland Cube 60/30, and Vox ADVT30/15. Any other suggestions/comments on those?

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

In the late 80's, Fender made a line of SS amps that had red knobs and a grayish grillcloth......like the Deluxe 85. They also had a highgain channel, and basically looked just like tube amps. You can find those used for $150-$200.
Line 6 Flextones and Spyders are finally starting to become cheap on the used market, and $200 is about right for some of those.

I'd also suggest doing Ebay and recycler.com searches in the price range you can afford, and see what pops up.

eBay - Johnson J-Station. For cleans, I'll take on anybody. :D

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

I highly recommend the TECH21 TM10 or TM30.....and if you can swing a little more dough, the TM60 is perfect:bigthumb:

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

If you want clean..

100% pure snappy squeaky clean..

there is only one choice, a Roland Jazz Chorus.

I am the proud owner of a 70s Roland Jazz Chorus 60, and it's the second one in the house as my dad has one too (also orig. 70s)

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

Puck, I've actually heard that the Trademarks don't take pedals well, is that true?

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

I had a TM60 & on the clean channel, it took pedals very well....so so on the dirty channels, but it could be tweaked to a tolerable level.

Simon F has a TM60 now & loves it.....maybe he'll chime in too.

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

If you want clean and the ability to use pedals - stay away from Spiders

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

Yeah, it seems like modeling amps don't like pedals very much, since it's too much for the digital front end to handle. SS are hit or miss, and most low wattage tube amps sound pretty nice with pedals. I just like using modeling amps with the features they come with internally.

That was my only complaint with the Flextone series is that in the onboard effects.

- the 2 Chorus settings are pretty much un-usable
- the 2 Flanger settings are pretty much un-usable
- there is NO PHASER!!!!!!!! (Luckily my amp takes the my Boss Phaser pretty well)
- No Octave

Hmmm

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

The Roland Cubes are :cool3:

The new Vox Valvetronix are pretty cool as well. Check 'em out.

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

The cube series isn't to bad, but they do not compare to a decent tube amp cranked. Still if your stuck at playing amps like the classic 30 below 4 i'd say its a very wise alternitive.

REad the original post dude. He can't crank a tube amp.

I like the pre DSP Fender SS stuff. The Ultra Chorus and Stage Deluxe were pretty cool clean amps.

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

I know, I was just saying I dont think you can compare a slightly overdrived clean from a tube and a SS.

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

+1 on the J-Station for Sparkly VOX cleans or a number of Fender inspired tones.
AND
+1 on those old fender practice amps with the grey carpet covers and the red knobs. Awesome for cleans and take pedals well (onboard distortion sux).

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

The J-Station responds well to both my Spina-modified DS-1 and my Duncan SFX-01. The downside, is that they don't make them anymore. They're fairly reliable, but if the software goes south on you, its harder to get them serviced. (Johnson does still do the service, I believe.)

Re: SS/Modelling Amp for Cleans

The Kabala of all clean SS tone is the Roland JC. Based on that I'd go cube. Like Roland couldn't get the "Roland" sound into the Roland amp? I would bet that the cubes ARE JC's in miniture. You also have access to a nice Fender Twin, and a flexible enough Vox. The cube 60 will give you a presence control that you may or may not want.

I haven't felt the need to futz with any pedals. GO to a local shop and have them plug a fuzz and a chorus into one and see. I can't imagine my JC setting NOT working with them...

Nope, the cubes are nowhere near the old JC sound.
