If I am understanding this right, in order to make them hum canceling in 2 and 4 and the right polarity, i have to reverse the leads on the ssl5, and use the mid ts in the neck, and the neck in the mid?

Correct...I just did this exact same thing with Fender Fat 50 N,M and the SSL6 in the bridge...When I read magnet polarity on the poles,I end up with either scenario when I do strat pickups...My Fat 50middle RWRP now resides in the neck..I use a Stew Mac polarity checker so I Know magnet polarity..

Neck polarity...South
Middle.........North
Bridge.........South

Or....
Neck......North
Middle...South
Bridge...North

Re: ssl-5 + texas specials

Mark....so I checked the pickups and magnet polarity...This strat has Tex Mex neck and middle and the SSL6 in the bridge...

By moving the Fat 50 middle to the neck and the neck Fat 50 to the middle...Notice the magnet polarity...The RWRP Fat 50 is in the neck now...

Starting from the neck pickup then,I'm South/North/South polarity..

Re: ssl-5 + texas specials

Thanks for the input! How do you like this setup, does the ssl6 act as sort of a higher output texas special? And why the ssl6 and not the ssl5 for you?
My goal is to have a nice blues strat that can get heavy bridge sounds when needed for rock, with out resorting to humbuckers. I have tried a ssl3 before and had good results, but I would like to retain just a hint of the strats bite in the bridge, while being thick.

Not really....I'm not a fan of the Texas Specials...I just realized that the guitar I show actually has Fat 50/Fat 50/SSL6....The Tex Mex pickups are in my sunburst AS Strat...

It's been so long since I've used the TS..But I do remember it was the mids that I hated(too up front) but I've read where these pickups work great in some strats, but in others they are horrible..A buddy of mine loves em and has been using them since they came out. I Like the Fat 50s more!

I have never understood the appeal of the Texas Specials? They hold together well at high volumes, but otherwise I think are unremarkable.

What I like about the SSL5 is it isn't honky or dark like a lot of hot pickups. Instead it is still bright and lively while standing up to obscene amounts of volume and distortion.

Re: ssl-5 + texas specials

I happen to LOVE my set of Texas Specials. Probably the best single coil sound I've ever heard and they beat out a set of Fralin Blues Specials. They just had more bite and sounded more strat-like. Real balanced in the mids where the Fralins were too steely sounding with a hard metallic edge to them. Texas Specials need to be in Ash/maple strats to sound their best. They aren't as crisp or snappy in alder/rosewood.

I did a recording with the Texas Specials where I played in the 2nd position... I'll try and find it and post it here.

They're also amazing at all gain levels.

I find the Texas Specials to be a bit more guitar specific...They either sound great in the right guitar,or horrible...This goes for any pickup also, but I've just never got along with em...Prefer the Fat 50s.
