Hello! Sorry for reviving an old post, but just wanted to ask. Which one could be better for an Squier Affinity Stratocaster. It's my only Strat (SSS) guitar, and no... I don't use it for live shows now, but would like it to be on par with my other guitars with Seymour Duncan pickups.
Should I go for SSL-5 or SSL-6? I really don't understand much about the flat vs staggered poles difference thing. I'm mainly a humbucker guy*

The difference is the magnet stagger. The original purpose of the magnet stagger was to balance the loudness of all strings on vintage instruments. However over time the radius of the fretboards changed as did the gauge of strings and their composition. So the stagger has lost some of its usefulness and is something that is offered for legacy support to keep instruments period correct.

I have a SSL-6 in my Strat because the neck has a super flat 12-16" radius which would cause uneven string-to-string volume if the magnets were staggered. OTOH according to Fender's site Squier Affinities have a 9.5" fingerboard radius which really could go either way, so go with whichever looks better to you or whichever you can get a better price on. FWIW SSL-5s tend to be easier to find.

Hey there calling the thread from the dead! I have a 9-14 compound radius neck... I think it must be the 14 part that matters here, can you confirm I better go with 'flat', that is ssl-6. Also .... would it cause problems if I used flat middle with a staggered neck pu?

I am sure you have a lot of experience to draw upon, but I found the video interesting, I think flat pu's sound better in this case with 10 inch radius fb.

I have the SSL5 combined with 2 SSL1 in my strat (the one in the user pic) WITHOUT reverse middle, and it's so good in every position I started thinking this will be the final configuration of this guitar after 28 years of experiments....

What is it about a single coil that makes it function well with 500k pots high-output only? how hot should it be?

in the bridge i wouldnt use 500k pots with the ssl6 but in the neck it brings some sparkle back to the high end. a single coil that is high output tends to be darker as well. i think most humbuckers sound better with 500k pots. if i am going to load a guitar hss i will either use vintage output single coils and a bright, low output humbucker with 250k pots or something like the ssl6 in the middle and neck with 500k pots. i had a strat for a long time that had the ssl6 mixed with an alnico 2 patb3 and it was a great setup
