The difference is the magnet stagger. The original purpose of the magnet stagger was to balance the loudness of all strings on vintage instruments. However over time the radius of the fretboards changed as did the gauge of strings and their composition. So the stagger has lost some of its usefulness and is something that is offered for legacy support to keep instruments period correct.

Not to derail this thread too far, but how well will a SSL6 balance output with with a TB5 Custom in the bridge?
i agree. the ssl6 in the neck with 500k pots is a great sounding pup with the output to keep up with a bucker much better than a vintage style strat pup.
