Actually, it was just a normal early 60's strat with normal, early 60's strat pickups.

The tone was all in the hands and heart. ;)

Oh pulease!

Re: SSL or APS...for blues...please advise

The problem with trying to cop PAF tones is they varied SOOO much. Some with A2 mags and some with A5. Lew said that early 60's the A5 magnet became standard.

I don't know what blues guys you are looking at but, for what it's worth, in the Clapton pup thread his tones were discussed in great detail. For Wheels of Fire tone it was the consensus that 59's were the way to go, but for Fresh Cream or the Mayall stuff something like a Seth or A2P are the way to go. In the manner of delta blues, BB king has been using 490s for years. They released (if I remember correctly) as the second wave of the humbucker. They have an A2 magnet like the 57 classic. John Lee Hooker uses minis.

On topic though, blues guys here use various things. For the most authentic old pup tones that sound like a pup that has been used for 40-50 years go with the Antiquity. A thing to remember is that those strat in the 60's were at the most 14 years old, so the magnets weren't as degaussed in those recordings as the Antiquities are. If you want the newer tone go with the SSL-1. Also Curly (another blues guy) uses the APS' neck and middle and a Hot in the bridge. The neck and middle then have less glass. Just FYI.

OK, you take a strat, a pair of Blackface Fenders, a couple of pedals, and then sound exactly like Stevie.

Heck, I invite you to my house and play through my rig. I bet you won't sound like me. ;)

Fender FAt 50's is the way to go.

Hello and thanks everyone for your continued wisdom.

Yesterday, I heard DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Solos...WOW!

Perhaps its just me, but I absolutely loved that sound!

Has anyone else played or heard these?

To that end, does anyone have any additional feedback regarding DiMarzio's pickups, especially their Virtual Vintage series?

Thanks again.

I never said I could sound like some else. I did say that *tone* is not in the fingers.

Hello again everyone and thanks for your GREAT input.

How would you describe the tonal differences and hopefully improvements from going from stock American Standard pick ups to SD SSL's (staggered w/RW/RP) or APS?

I keep reading that the difference is minimal, or is it that my guitar playing friends are deaf. LOL.

Thanks again.
