SSL5 tapped "in-between"?

Hi guys,

I'm new here, and I'm here for the following reason:

I use an SSL5 in the tapped version in the neck position. The full power sound is quite to my liking, but the tapped sound is too thin and trebly for me.

Is it possible to use some kind of in-between version of the tapped and the full output? Like connecting the tapped out as usual but the full output with a resistor or something like that?

Best,

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, that should work to use a resistor to leave some of the tapped portion active.

Re: SSL5 tapped "in-between"?

Sure. I'd use a pot to determine which value resistance is optimal. I recommend placing the resistance between the red and white wires, personally, even though this runs counter to tradition. I found that I got more clarity with that portion of the coil.

I used to just shelve down some high end with a small value cap (~1nF or less) and resistor (value determined through the use of a pot) while running the pickup with the red and white wires shorted.

the ssl5 is a single coil, there is no red/white. this one is a tapped single coil there is two hot leads, one is halfway though the coil so ~6k and full output ~12k or whatever the specs are

Re: SSL5 tapped "in-between"?

There is a red (tap) and a white and a black. My recommendations are based on this.

Re: SSL5 tapped "in-between"?

So I'd connect black to ground and red and white to hot? But with a resistor that connects red and white? Do I get this right?

Re: SSL5 tapped "in-between"?

Black to ground, white to hot, red is your tap wire. If you use a partial shunt (resistor), connect it between the red and white.

If you use an RC shelf, connect red to white to enable the tap, and connect that pair to the RC using a double pole switch when the tap is enabled. The RC should be disconnected from the pickup when the tap is disabled.
