for giggles, I stacked my boss super OD in front of my boss heavy metal pedal to see if I could get a bit more gain and high end outta the HM and....it worked! really digging the setup actually.

got me thinking - I saw an interview many years ago where mustaine was all surprised that the guitarists Exodus were using 2 distortion pedals, but I don't know what ones they were (I'd like to know though).

any of y'all use 2 distortions/ODs back-to-back? which ones? if there was already a thread, just point me there.

BBE Green Screamer into Keeley DS-1.

DS-1 by itself is ok, but an OD into it gives it more balls and gain. Basically the DS-1 is like the pre-amp.

Got that Green Scream with a free microphone on ebay for $50, unreal deal. I think it's much better than the Bad Monkey, no fizz on any setting.

rats, I shoulda kept my ds-1 to test it with an OD. I kinda like the fizz of the monkey though I have to admit, it's what separates it from they typical TS clones.

I run my Wampler Ecstacy into my Barber LTD and its really nice. Very low noise when both are engaged and I'm not playing, which is a big plus. Its definitely a usable tone. Trying out different pedal placement in your chain is well worth the trouble.

I love running two dirt boxes into a clean amp. I'm using an SD-1 as well, into my Cool Cat fuzz. I run my amp mostly clean with a little dirt because I hate totally clean sounds. For different songs I will use either the fuzz or the SD-1 because they sound so different, and I'll lay them on together for strong leads and heavier distortion (which I don't use much of, only leads). In other words, I'll use one to boost the other.

I spent so much time tweaking between the fuzz/amp/OD. It's really amazing how many different sounds I can get, and how tweaking each variable can alter everything.

My last project was a Zeppelin cover band. We played a few gigs and had a good time. This setup was perfect. For instance, in a song like Dazed and Confused I would use the fuzz. That riff played on the one string using the full bends really complemented the fuzz, it gave it a lot of character. But on a tune like Good times Bad times I would use the SD-1. It's crunch is so clear. It never gets mushy or muddy. The power chords and the intro riff come in so clearly with that crunch.

One cool thing about the SD-1 one that's really odd is that the pedal actually doesn't have much range. It seems like the drive and level stay the same past half. It's like it has two settings "More and Less". But those two settings sound perfect once you tweak the tone knob.

Recently started running fuzz into an overdriven amp and really dig that.

DS-1, $40. Just don't drink coffee or smoke or whatever your vice is for a few days, then it's paid for!!!

hehe. I did have one for a bit, and sold it for some reason. might have to wait, I just picked up another pedal on a whim, doh! new thread time...

I used to run 2 Tube Screamers together. One set w/t the gain up, and Vol. at unity,The other Just a touch of gain,And the Vol. above unity for boost. Sounded Nice & Thick together, But the noise floor was to high using Single coils. Useing Buckers could get Muddy.

I've run a SD pick up booster into my TS-9, and then into my Tri-Axis. My gain was set pretty low in the Tri for this. I got some cool sounds, but it was very noisy which forced me to use a noise supressor. Overall, I got sick of doing all of that and just us my TS-9 now. You can get cool sounds doing this, but the noise can add up quickly.

Doesn't everyone stack dirt pedals at one point or another? haha.

I've never tried running a TS style pedal into a ds-1...but since soooo many people here seem to dig it, I'm gonna have to try it now. Ds on its own is pretty un-usable to me (though I keep one around for making ugly sounds while recording).

But lately I have found I really dig running my BBE green screamer (the only TS style pedal I've tried and actually liked ALOT), into my Swollen Pickle MkII for certain stuff. Works beautifully for (oddly enough) metal tones, great chug on palm mutes, and just generally tightens things up and sounds beautiful.
I also found awhile back that I actually like running my CH-1 into dirt pedals for leads (CH-1 before dirt), has a similar effect to running the BBE into the swollen pickle, but adds a weird moving shimmer thats really really addictive. I'm not really sure why the Chorus tightens stuff up, or adds a bit more dirt (since its not really boosting the signal in any way I can notice on its own), but it does, and adds clarity and brings out harmonics. Its pretty weird.

my dirt chain is a modded sd-1 into a modded ds-1 into an mxr classic distortion into a little big muff. what's this new idea of having all these pedals on at once?:scratchch

seriously though, i mostly keep the first three set for low distortion/high output with tones somewhere between mild and bright, and then the fuzz set for just the first gain stage and the tone set pretty bright since it's real dark sounding at lower gain settings. stacking two or three of these and having an EQ at the end makes for some huge sounds:) if i've got the bosses and the mxr set for no distortion and medium-high levels, i get this kickass raunchy-midrangey blues kinda tone with a neck pickup. kick up the levels, set the mxr classic for a slight bit more drive and run it through a slightly scooped EQ and it's metal. switch off the ds-1 and the EQ but turn on the muff, it's sabbath. turn'em all on, and it's just mush though:lmao:
