Staggered or flat? - single coils

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

I think so...I find staggered single coils to be a bit more chimey that non staggered or flat...in most settings and with guitars with a flatter (9.5 or higher) radius the flats will have better string to string defination but I still prefer the tone of staggered pickups.

i think i read somewhere that the YJM pups are just the flat pole version of the HS2? so, yeah, i guess there's a significant difference in tone there.

No, the YJM is the staggerred version of the HS-3.

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

my brothers american standard strat used to have 3 flat pickups. the neck pickup shorted out and they replaced it with a staggered fender pickup. it sounded better.

i'd go with staggered.

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

Staggered seems to add a certain "Strat" sound to the stuff.

Bridge pups like Flat poles though... IMO that is.

+1
staggered pups emphasize some frequencies more than flats :D

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

staggered is definately where its at for vintage strat tones.

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

All of my Strats have staggered pickup poles, whereas most of my Teles have flat poles. OTOH, Lollar Strat pickups are flat poles, and they seem to deliver a wonderful Strat tone.

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

The stagger is for a wound G, so the B string is way quieter than the G on a vintage stagger. Some guys like it, but if pickups were to be staggered "correctly" for a plain G, the G pole would be lower than the B pole (in relation to the strings, radius notwithstanding)

I like a reverse "Hendrix" stagger, too. It's a little more balanced from strign to string. I don't like flat or "radiused" which is essentally flat from string to string. I like some stagger. I like it when pups have plastic bobbins around the magnets so I can do a custom stagger, too.

Re: Staggered or flat? - single coils

The SSL-1's and Alnico 2 Pro staggered singles on some of my guitars don't have the same output from one string to another. That's annoying and unmusical. How's a guy supposed to record with those things if the volume goes up and down depending on what string I'm playing on?

I don't know about tonal differences, but I'd expect flat pole piece pickups, or ones like Dimarzio singles that are staggered to follow the curve of a fretboard, to be much more useable in terms of giving you a consistent output level from all the strings.
