Peter, I haven't heard of Frisket Film. What is it? Do you know if it can be had in the States?

I don't know about the film since I would think it needs to be on a very smooth surface. I would think the stain would still seep under the film. However, your recommendation lead me to liquid masking which seems like a viable solution. Looking at some woodworking forums everybody recommends to seal the area you don't want stained. So I might just seal the neck first then stain the body.

Tapes work if you are applying the stain carefully and not trying to overdo either the intensity of the colour or the dye concentration or the physical amount applied near the interface. The light colour can go on first, then do the darker one. The wood will have soaked up a certain amount reducing its ability or propensity to take up more.
Sealer works on the surface. It might not have an effect on deeper levels.

yes just google Frisket film, its used a lot by graphic artists and spray painters.
I also use it directly on bare wood, prior to spraying, i use it for masking, and also for masking up the bridge position on acoustic guitar tops before spraying.
its not expensive, and it doesnt bleed, you obviously have to make your raw timber as smooth as possible, thats done simply with moving up the grit scale with sanding, and prior to application of stain/lacquer polishing it up with 0000 grade steel wool, and then a final polish with a medium rough clean cloth., Yes, the cloth has a cutting effect on wood.
I was put onto Frisket by a very respected acoustic builder.
I used to use gold masking tape, pinstriping tape, all manner of things... its pretty much all been chucked in the bin, and the frisket is what I use now.
