You can install a supercharged 5.4 cobra engine in a pinto, and youll still have a pinto. MiM, and upgrade it later. I am conteplating this very thing also, and I've decided a used fender will fit the bill, with upgrades later as needed/finances allow.

If you start with the MIM, you can (and will) mod later. If you start with the Squire, it will always be a squire and you will later want/need to buy a better guitar.

So the feeling Im getting is that neither the Squire nor MIMs are good enough as a Strat.

The next step would be Highway 1s. Are they any good?

I got a highway one. However, there is nothing more left that is stock, except for the body and paint. You can check it out in my videos "Lenny" and "Little Wing". Keep in mind though that there is over $1000 in upgrades in it, and a hundred hours of time, probably. (It was a learning experience over 6 years, and i probably made mistakes in something like soldering, or electronics. It has 9 way switching too and full cavity shielding. It is what it is )

The latest rosewood neck is a warmoth - so i would say, now it is closer to a warmoth, than a highway 1.

Stock highway 1s are great guitars. Play many of them, and choose the best one. The paint is very nice and thin laqueer. The necks are usa standard necks (says made in usa on headstock. not sure if same grade wood is used though). The stock pickups sound decent, i was pleasantly surprised. I got mine for $400 used back in 2000, and it was my first real strat. I was very happy with it.

Well i am gonna follow the trend on this one... Go with the MiM Standard and upgrade as money becomes available. It will still be a great instrument, given the Ceramic pickups can be just a little harsh with some rigs (at the same time with the right setup and EQ they can sound great). Wait save money and then upgrade a little at a time until you turn that MiM into a tone monster...

I could be missing something, but if you have the money for a HWY 1, why are we choosing between a std MIM and upgraded Squier?

Now it has sort of moved to upgraded MIM vs. stock HWY 1 in that price range.

No, the MIM Standard is great, but an upgraded one is even better. This is why people are suggesting that you buy a used MIM and use the extra money to upgrade it.

MIMs and Squiers can both make a good enough guitar - try before you buy. The fist step is of course to search for something used...

If what you care for is the tone and not the brand, the next step is a G&L Legacy Tribute... great quality for guitars made in Korea.

I love my Hwy 1, didn't do any mods on it yet but it's a fine guitar. It was what I wanted, I've compared it with more then a few Hwy 1 models and it was the best sounding to my ears.
