Static noise when rolling any pot

Re: Static noise when rolling any pot

Every guitarist should have some of this in their toolbox:

Caig Labs Deoxit 5

As others have mentioned, Bourns pots come at different price points. I love these model 95's with conductive polymer elements: (A smidgen pricey, but well worth it.)

P.S. They come supplied with the solder lug star washer, so you don't have to solder ground directly to the pot.

^Yup those blue & black plastic ones are the expensive ones. The PDB241 are the ones with long lifecycle of turns. The PDB183 is cheaper than PDB185 from element14/farnell, both have gold threads as well. Most of their regular guitar stuff usually has gold threads on them too.

Actually one thing I forgot to mention before. If the OP bought plain shaft knobs which use a metal dome shaped knob with an allen key slot for tightening the adjustment fit, then those can give static noises when turning, atleast I've had that problem before.

Not knowing a ton about the expensive pots above...why are they expensive, and why would you choose them over traditional pots that they make?

Re: Static noise when rolling any pot

Those plastoc ones are rated for longer rotational life 200,000 turns or maybe 500,000 min. They also have less rotational noise due to the resistive element being not the usual one found in normal pots. Apparently they are nice to turn & the taper and other tolerances might be tighter.

The PDA24 series are rated for 200,000 rotations. PDB242 for 500,000 min. Neither of these series are very expensive & are well made.

The PDB185 series are push pull types & PDB181 are normal ones, both with rotational life of 15,000 turns & the push/pull has 10,000 actuations life. These PDB181 are cheaper & judging by the lifecount they probably last shorter than the other series.

Those are the specs I found from the datasheets I had downloaded, they have more series of pots if anyone wants to look into them.
