Steinberger spirit mod.

Hello, Im a first timer pick up replacer. I have a Steinberger spirit travel guitar with H.S.H. and 5 position selector. I’m putting sh1 with 4 conductors in the neck, vintage rails in the middle,
and a sh4 JB, 4 conductors at the Bridge.
I will split the pick ups with a push pull volume knob, 500k pot. I have looked through miriads of diagrams and have not found this wiring diagram. I’m sure some I have seen would work, but being new at this, I need to be sure. Can someone direct me to the correct wiring diagram for this mod.
Thanks !
.

If you don't want a tone pot, all you have to do is to ignore it in the schematic.

If you mount a 4 conductors mid PU, just wire it like in this schematic:

BTW and FWIW, I have a HSH Steinberger Spirit with almost exactly this wiring and have mounted several kinds of PU's in it. IME, a regular PAF clone in neck position doesn"t necessarily sound beefy enough, especially once splitted; a 24 frets maple stick requires something a bit stronger IMHO. Also, pole spacing might be slightly "off" with some models of pickups (reason why I've finally mounted three blade PU's in mine).

Now, do what you want and be happy. :-)

Re: Steinberger spirit mod.

Thanks, well I already bought the pick ups, so I’ll just have to work with it. I’m sure it will sound better than the originals ! The pole spacing is something I had not thought about yet. I bought this guitar with a problem trem . I took it apart and found it had a missing screw at the knifes edge, I simply replaced it. Now it works great. I brought it over here to Japan. Great little travel guitar. Thanks again !

Re: Steinberger spirit mod.

Well, you can't split a Vintage Rails (only half of the strings would work), You can split the other 2 with a single push/pull pot.

Re: Steinberger spirit mod.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure about that. I’m using a push/ pull vol. for the humbuckers, but if I split between the 2nd and 4th position that blends the rails with he humbuckers I assume I’ll only get a blended tone from 3 of the strings, and the other strings full humbucker tone. Perhaps the output (vol.) between the strings will be different as well.

Re: Steinberger spirit mod.

My guess is that would sound...strange. I might just try to split the humbuckers in 2 & 4, and blend it with the Vintage Rails (full). Or just install a push/pull so the humbuckers can be split in any position, which would be the most versatile.
