Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

I agree. But it is a good vehicle for small, label-less bands to get their music out. It sucks, but it has it's uses for bands.

The entire notion that MySpace has to be used, and I understand that this is the case, almost wholly puts the RIP over punk. It IS the establishment, and not in a way that it ever really intended.

Punk IS the thing it revolted against. It IS mainstream. It IS co-opted. It IS acceptable. It served its intended purpose and it has failed to find another useful one and serves as an outlet that was held by hair-metal bands in the late 80's.

As for saying my music is better than SP, I never said that, I sid I'd like to see them try to do all their recording an instrument at a time, using basic home recording gear and still pull off a good quality album (based on sound).

...only if you promise to try and do the whole thing again and do so as loaded as they likely were at the time.....

You guys can argue with me day and night, I still wont like the Sex Pistols. Get over it.

I don't think you'll ever like them, and it doesn't bother me one bit. But I think you're letting your personal tastes cloud your comprehension of punk as a genre historically.

I know alot of metal fans that can't stand listening to Sabbath but when it comes down to brass tacks to talk about the roots of metal they stand at attention with the respect and awe that band deserves for its contributions.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Fender_Punk no one cares if you like the Pistols or not, but it is getting more obvious that you don't have a clue about punk music.

I would suggest getting yourself a copy of "EP-LP" by the Subhumans, and then go back and compare that to your list of bands. :)

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

I think a lot of "modern punk" devotees are pretty poor historians. Having said that I don't think it is a sacred art form as many would insist.

Haha, that's ok, I don't mind...A very influential band with influential sound, whether you like them or not..I personally love them, and sometimes my band covers "Pretty Vacant".

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

To address a few things.

I've already conceded that the SP had a huge influence, I wont argue that. However, The Clash, The Ramones, New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, MC-5, Blondie these are the bands I think when I think of the roots of punk.

I've read about the history of punk rock many times and my mom was a punk in the 90s and met Iggy Pop, Ramones and The Cramps. I've heard her takes of pun, and she loves the Sex Pistols.

as for Punk becoming the establishment and being mainstream, that isn't punk. There are still many legit punk bands, like Subhumans, Leftover Crack, Propagandhi, Bad Religion, and the many punk bands in my area such as Fifty Stars Anger, Hold Up Your End, F*ck Knuckles, Dead City Citizens. There's still punk, and it's true, people just don't notice it because the mainstream bobard's people with crap like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Thursday and call that punk.

Another thing that pisses me off is the commercialization of Warped Tour. Once a great skateboarding/punk/ska festival, now sponsored by AT&T and headlined by K-OS and Coheed And Cambria. Makes me want to puke.

To say punk is one thing is to completely mis-define punk. I think overall the intent was always to get the attention that things were in a sh*tty state in politics and in music, and they wanted positive change. Your beloved Sex Pistols even pushed notions like this in their songs, as did The Clash, even the Ramones in some songs like I Wanna Live, Planet Earth 1988, Humankind, and it's still done today.

Will I sit here and try to act like a historian? No. But if you want to talk history of punk, whether it's the origins, British movement or American hardcore punk of the 80s, let's talk.

I also stand firm that, as corporate and established as Myspace is (RUPERT F*CKING MURDOCK OWNS IT), indie bands can rely on it, soundclick and pure volume as a way of getting their tunes heard. If it wasn't for myspace I would've never heard Good Riddance (the band, not song), The Germs, Strike Anywhere or Bouncing Souls or various smaller bands which I listen to.

Has punk gotten a little more melodic in some bands? yes, but I'd rather see a simple 4 note melody or small solo thrown in than the same boring 3 chord mould. Part of being punk is being original, and having every single song be 4 chords at 220bpm just makes things stale.

As for me suing a metronome, I tried using a click track when recording the drums, but the drums over powered the headphones. Do I care if you like it? No! As for the mark I got on it, and I swear on my record collection this is true: 59/60 and it was worth 15% of my mark. There was a total of 10 songs.:nana:

To openly ponder the roots of punk and not use words like "anarchist", "nihilism" and "poverty" means you've missed the point.

Go grow your hair...you're describing the hippie movement. Sorry someone didn't get around to telling you sooner.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Punk preaches unity and practices division.

Here's a joke for you guys: Why did the punk stop trying to prove he was punk?

He either went to school, got a job or drug problem, or is now a hippie.

pun crock is fun while it lasts tho. keep on rockin the suburbs bro.

To say all punks are anarchists is just plain stupid. As for poverty, I was just talking to Smilemon on msn and listing things punk was against:

-Kyle- says: (12:43:14 AM)
to me it was the talentless spinnoff of classic rock
Scum - (L)Tamara(L) says: (12:43:53 AM)
nah, it was a call against classic rock, disco, easy listening, stoner jam music, poverty and capitalism

If I'm not mistaken, there's the word poverty in there!!! WOW!! What I find hypocritical is the amount of arrogance you talk with when discussing punk. Sorry for not being Punk-ier than thou.

As for the hippie movement, a lot of the ideals from the hippie movement (such as non-conformity, nihilism, drug use) were carried over into punk. You want to keep discussing this, I think we should show Krall some respect and move this into a new thread, communicate via e-mail, or end it here. Funny how much animosity can spawn from one sarcastic comment.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

Sorry about your thread krall.

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

I like the sound room punk thread alot more than this one!

Sorry for the hi-jack Krall!

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

This thread is so punk. It got all caught up in itself and what it was supposed to stand for and never accomplished what it set out to do in the first place.

OD pedal? yes? no?

Re: Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)

An explanation for this thread. I played in an old school '77 punk sounding band back in the day, and in 15 years with that band we put out a bunch of 45's and stuff..In the earlier days I used a Canadian made VT before going to an old Traynor..Around '97 I traded a couple of Les Pauls to Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) for his red custom Fender Tonemaster head and cab (now long gone), and man that was the best matched amp to my other guitar player's Bassman 100..We retired in December 2000 due to family commitments, but now the kids are grown enough for us to give it another whirl..My other guitar player still has his Bassman..We had (have) that Pistols sound, well, I should say the other guitar player still has the overall sound and I was wondering if I got an old Twin or Super Reverb if it would have that tone i'm looking for to get that old punk sound back, but at a decent price (within $1500).
