Steve Katz tone

I have always really loved the tone (I think) Steve Katz got on Blood Sweat and Tears' "Lisa, Listen to Me" The lead tone is super smooth and fuzzy and the rhythm tone has a really nifty "plunky" quality to it that I dig.
Does anyone know what gear he was using for that tune?
Thanks

Re: Steve Katz tone

I always assumed he used something like a Gibson ES-335 neck pickup with the tone rolled off, maybe a Big Muff, and some kind of blackface Fender combo amp. That's what his lead tone always sounded like to me...but I don't know.

He was the originally rythym guitarist in the Blues Project..the band that B, S & T kinda grew out of. Danny Kalb was the lead guitarist and Al Kooper played piano and organ in the Blues Project.

Re: Steve Katz tone

Thanks for the help Lew. Not that I can really drop any funds on a 335 or a new amp, but I've wondered for a long time. I'll also have to check out the Blues Project for kicks sometime.
