Re: Steve Vai At His Best

I like Vai's stuff as well but I don't think that first video posted really holds well against people like Wes Montgomery or Lee Ritenour.

Guitar playing is not a competition but if Tender Surrender came up on my player, I would start skipping over to Fourplay or the next Vai track.

Just saying. ;)

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

oh please. montomery's thumb is no match for vai's little pinky fingernail. lee ritenour? come on man, these are jazz musicians you're comparing. the fact that vai can swing some nice jazz only proves what a virtuoso he is. he's not out trying to prove he's the best jazz guitarist out there.

oh hell, eric johnson could easily spank montgomery or ritenour and we've all seen him play with vai and satriani in G3.

that's like saying hendrix or page was the greatest guitarist of all time. hendrix, although a better guitarist than page, wasn't a phenomenal guitarist in terms of playing skill. he was good and he had quite a few innovative ideas, but to say that he was the greatest guitarist because of that is a crock.

vai doesn't always sound supreme, but then again who does? no one is going to sound excellent every time you hear them, and vai is no exception. besides, why dig up such crusty old jazz stuff? what, do you still have the ritenour 8" records given to you when you were a bell-bottom, bowl-cut kid in the early seventies? you probably think jeff beck is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

I used to like Steve Vai but it changed...I deleted many songs on my HDD to have more space on it. :13:

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

II deleted many songs on my HDD to have more space on it. :13:
That's like the ultimate sin to me, no matter who the artist is. I heard some radio dude talking about throwing away 100+ CDs to create more shelf space, they were all on itunes anyway. I guess I just love music too musch to delete anything no matter how infrequently I listen to it.

RE: Vai, I really like his slower songs, For the Love of God is one of my favorite instrumentals ever...

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

^Sometimes you make me wonder...alot...
..hehe

sorry, i'll try to dumb it down a little next time. :nana: just kidding, it was a lot of thoughts crammed in a couple of paragraphs

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

get over yourself dude. why are you always so arrogant? you act like you're some ace guitarist or something. yeah your recordings are good, your tone is excellent, and your playing is pretty good (for someone who plays at slower speeds), but your music isn't that memorable.

everyone is always praising you, including me, but it's time i be honest here because i think you let it get to your head. your songs sound like blah, blah, blah guitar solos. sure they're good, but there's no build up of drama or peaks and valleys, they're like extended guitar solos that kind of turn monotone after a while. we all have a lot to learn around here, so stop acting like you're some legendary player already. you're no better than me or half the other people in this forum anyway.

just because you can't get my opinion or disagree, you don't have to talk down to me in such a condescending mannner mr. big shot. you're not that great.

Umm, I had well over 500 CDs, nowhere to put them, had like 300 or so that I might only like 1 song on (or maybe none anymore)
And it made a huge tax deduction

Yeah right!!!
I think I am so good.....it really gets to my head......man....you got a problem....you dissed a few players that are top of the line...and expect me to nice about it???
Why don't you look at your own wordings...and opinions??

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

i wasn't really dissing any of those players. i just don't think they're as great as people make them out to be. besides, the dude was bringing up these crusty old jazz players that didn't really have anything to do with my post. i never made the statement that vai was a great jazz player or even mentioned the word "jazz." i just happened to like his playing in that particular tune.

i do think page, hendrix, and those guys are SOMEWHAT overrated as guitar players. take a guy like segovia, for instance, and you won't hear the media raving about him. then hendrix comes along in his black and white band and all the sudden the media makes purple haze out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. come on man. if you really think about it, my opinions aren't that radical are they?

oh well, to each his own. of course it's cool that you don't agree with me. i can respect that you have your own opinions. in fact, i would have expected a similar response from you because you don't seem to think too highly of shredders. a lot of people don't care for shredders either, but then again, a lot of people do.

i don't think vai is the greatest by any means, but he is very masterful. personally, i like eric johnson better.

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

Since when did I not like shredders??
I am one this boards oldest Gilbert fans as it is...since he came out in my youth, as for Vai and Satch..also part of my youth.
We had it all back then...all the 60s, 70s, 80s stuff going on.
Have always disliked Yngwies music alot...but he is a part of it all as well....and surely knows how to play it.
I do not care what people play...if they have something to say, well I am a happy camper!
But I do not just hear guitar music....and I am not much for for little boxes, I hear everything from Mozart to Techno....

Re: Steve Vai At His Best

for some reason i rememebered that some of your posts in the past seemed to indicate that you didn't really care for shredders. my bad, i just remembered wrong then. i'm not the kind of guy who will go and research past postings.

i did notice some techno influence in your music though. i once heard this techno band who sounded a lot like pink floyd. although i'm not into techno, i think they sounded really cool. i wish i could remember what they were called.
