Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

My guess would be the highest output pickups you can find that are single coils or jr/lil models.

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

You really need humbuckers in order to get that tone...Dimarzio humbuckers to be exact. These questions come up all the time, and in general, there are very few Duncan pickups that correspond to a certain Dimarzio pickup. In this case, I'd recommend routing the Strat for Humbuckers and getting a set of Dimarzios.

hi output? like the hotrails? bridge or neck?

Hot Rails would do it, along with Jolly's suggestions. You have quite a few choices. Check out the sound samples on the Duncan site, too.

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

Honestly, Duncans have too mich 'natural' high end for that tone without running TONS more gear than he ALREADY does.

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

While Vai has been known to use a Strat for clean stuff, for the high gain stuff you really need a humbucker, as stated above.
For some stuff you will also need a Fernandez Sustainer, as well.

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

I hate these questions.

How can I get this pickups tone with another pickup? You can't. Just use the original pickups.

Evo set!

+1. It always does seem a bit of a head scratcher.

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

And as always - the pup is a small part of the sonic mojo....for Vai I would say it's
#1 - In the hands (as with anyone that good)
#2 - A frickin' boatload of processors
#3 - pups (Evolutions - and from a previous post I put up up, I'll go with there is no substitute also)
#4 - Carved out trem bridge Alder? body rosewood neck axe

And for the record, I think the pup is about 5% of his tone. I think his sound is soooo processed a two by four with a danelectro lipstick tube wouldn't sound that different!

Maybe in the studio but not live...

WERD!

Don't expect 1 + 1 = 3

If you want that sound, then the pickups are a vital link. Each different model of pickup of ANY brand will reproduce overtones and harmonics differently from the next.

And I, for one, think Evolutions are some pretty kick-ass pickups.

suggests pu for Vai sound 4 a Stratocaster s-s-s

:saeek:

I agree with the people that states that pups are only a part of his tone. When you hear him playing (even clean) you don't hear a standard tone.

Have you thought in ussing a lil59' set or a Jbjr set? That will take you close to his tone. You probably won't nail it but, will you nail it if you had an Evo set?

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

This gets back to a postnI put up about DiMarzio vs Duncan - What compares? I think, for example that the PAF and the 59 are pretty darn close, but definitely each has it's own "unique" take on the classic pup. Some of the other's don't have any match, though, or anything that's close.

I suspect that the Evo may be one of those, as Vai obviously has some unique tastes. When we're talking about someone that distinctive, though, best to keep it close. And I'm still sure I would't sound anything like Vai even with his rig, and that he'd sound pretty close to himself with mine!

Apologies to those whm I may have offended with the "Boatload of effects" comment. While I respect the man's chops, I'm just not a fan of the sound, so I haven't really listened since Passion & Warfare. MAybe time to give him a listen!

Re: Steve VAi sound with Seymour Duncan!

Just to add more info (and to help you to reach the conclusion that pickup aren't that important :D, just kidding ).

I have check Ibanez web page and JEM's come stock with 4 different sets:

Evo's
Breed
Paf pro
Blaze (7 string)

Which's is he ussing in which song? More... Ussualy contracts only talk about which guitars a player shoud use in public events, but never says anything about which guitar you have to record with.
