steves special?

Re: steves special?

It bears keeping in mind that rock guitar tones have changed somewhat since the 80's. The Megadrive was in Dimarzio's lineup in the 80's. It was endorsed by Tony McAlpine at that time. Some of his 80's albums like Edge of Insanity and Maximum Security probably feature it. Dimarzio's catalogs at that time described it has having high output, aggresive tone, but surprising clarity. I've also heard users say that the pickup sounds quite different depending on which way you flip it.

Todays rock guitar tones are a little different than back then. Scooped midrange and more bass is in these days. This may be one reason Dimarzio discontinued the Mega Drive (which can still be custom ordered from them) and introduced the Steve's Special.

The Steve Morse pickups, which are not to be confused with anything in the current Dimarzion line, are actually pretty cool in the right guitar. If you like that thick, warm, somewhat woolly tone of the Air Norton in the neck, the Steve Morse neck is perhaps even more so. It's instantly recognizeable on any of Morse's recordings since the 80's.
I actually have the bridge model in two guitars. In a set neck, mahogany, 24 3/4" scale guitar, it just sounds hot and fat. In a bolt on guitar with a maple neck, ebony fretboard and plexiglass body, it has an almost Tele sounding twang. I can hear that sound on some of Morse's clean parts on his recordings too.

Re: steves special?

Are these the humbuckers in the Music Man Steve Morse sig guitar? They suck.

What I want to know is what the heavy single coil in the bridge-middle position is.

DP-108 Vintage and a Proprietary custom wound.

Re: steves special?

My Steve's special in my Petrucci Music Man is awesome, loud and powerful but articulate. It works especially well with my Marshall Studio 15, a midrange heavy amp.

Re: steves special?

Anybody know if the Steve's Special stays tight when detuned to C standard? Right now I'm playing a X2N in the bridge of my poplar, maple, ebony Jackson, but I'd like some more bass, tightness and definition when playing chords.
The DiMarzio site recommends D-Activator for my needs, but I couldn't find one soundclip (youtube and Big 4 DVD) that I really liked. That pickup's attack sounds very weird (artificial?) to me.
