I have an early SRV (not a Brazilian one). It is bone stock except I took the SRV pickguard off. I love the neck, it is my favorite aspect of this guitar. I dislike the gold hardware, I just don't care for it. Being a first year model I'm not messing with it. I do often toy with getting a used one and swapping out the gold for chrome, and ditching the Texas Specials for something like D. Allen Texas Floods, or Lollar blackface pickups. I think it would be close to perfect. You get used to the lefty trem BTW.001.jpg

have a look around for a 90s american standard, strat plus or strat plus deluxe. Change the pickups to your favourite set, change the pickguard to your favourite colour, and make your own signature model.

I concur...

Or you can get a LP and commence to magnet swapping. 'Cause most people don't know how to EQ a Strat.

Maybe the link goes straight to the maple fretboard model but I'd get the rosewood version.

Don't like maple boards. :(

It has the vintage noiseless pickups and switch for turning on the bridge pickup in the neck positions. 12 inch radius.

I'm interested.

The SRV signature is one of my favorite Strats offered by Fender. I love the neck profile on it. I'm also a fan of Texas Specials so it all works for me. However, I could go without the SRV on the guard so if I was to come across one, I'd most likely swap the pickguard out for a plain black one, possibly with different electronics altogether and just leave the SRV guard as-is.

Those Deluxe Player's Strats are real nice. Have played a few myself and wouldn't mind one either. It's a lot of Strat at a great price point.

I particularly like this specific colour scheme.

I can get one used for a decent price, should fill my need for a strat for a while until I can get my hands on something nicer.

It's features are something I can really take advantage of.

I bought one the first year they came out. The first thing I did was take that SRV guard off. Since that time mine had this pickguard on it:

It's the one on the left, with a black pearl guard. I liked it at first, but I got sick of looking at it. I put this one on it about a month ago:

This one is a red tortoise shell. I love it this way, my wife hates it. She wants me to take it off.

The tortoise looks killer IMHO...straight black is good too. I think the SRV stock guard is cool in terms of a nod to the man but if you're going to play it I say it has to go.

Haven't owned a true SRV but I did build out a Pink Paisley Strat with a SRV Signature Neck and loved everything about the neck.

Glenn. In another recent thread, you had traded one of your guitars to obtain a Fender MIM Stratocaster. What is the point of obtaining a second MIM Stratocaster when you are within striking distance of affording an American model?

I have some experience with both: Played an SRV strat extensively in a shop, it's my go-to guitar to test any new pedals/amps in their stock. And my friend bought a JM strat and he let me borrow it for several days.
Here's my take:
I love the SRV neck with its flat radius, huge frets. In fact I prefer it over any strats I played so far (JM, clapton, EJ, Jeff beck). Huge bending is a breeze on SRV, and I think it improves the clarity as well.
JM neck is a fat C, with 9.5 radius and 6105 frets. Personally I think it have a bit too much "shoulder", and the frets are a bit too small, but it's definitely playable. Some people may also prefer the non-glossy finish on the JM.

Now the tone, the fender texas specials got a notorious reputation being muddy, dull etc. But it sounds just fine on the SRV strat, I think pau ferro fingerboard and big frets help add some 'zing' to the overall tone. The tone is pure SRV, big, bold, smoky especially the neck position.
The Fender big dipper on JM strats have attained a lot of respect, where some boutique winders sought to replicate its sound. It sounds like how a strat should: only more glassy and quacky, with a lot more volume than you would expect from such a bright, underwound-ish pickup. It sounds great with overdrive, due to its amazing clarity. It can do the SRV thing as well, but compared side-to-side with a conventional strat pickups, some people may miss the "woody" midrange and think it sounds a bit bland/thin. But played on its own, or in a single guitar band, it's the ultimate strat tone.

If I sell my firebird I'm one hundred percent there, but I think it's too early to sell that guitar. I feel like I should at least get some good gigs out of it before selling it.

Right now I'm just looking for a decent stratocaster. A friend has one with the Big Dipper pickups, I could use that for recording, etc. a good setup also does wonders.

I found a strat. :) I'll post some pictures when I get it, should take a while, it's coming from Memphis USPS first class.

I haven't used those vintage noiseless pickups but heard it's what eric Clapton uses. So when I hear the 2005 cream reunion album... I'm hearing vintage noiseless pickups?
