STL-1 or ????

I've been playing my new "Esquire" quite a bit, and the tapped QP isn't doing it for me. It's like I've recreated my other Tele - the Schecter PT with a 59B and a coil-split. The QP gives me full-on roar or a brighter non-authentic-Tele sound. It's good, but it's not really Fendery. THis guitar needs to be Fendery, since the PT is not.

In the past, I've had several of the old standby, the STL-1 Vintage 54. Great pickup. If I was going to fix this guitar without thinking about it, I'd just automatically get an STL-1, stick it in there, and probably be happy. But, as long as I'm thinking about it, I have to admit that sometimes the STL-1 is a little too bright. I love the clarity and twang ion the low strings, but the top high strings can sometimes be a bit strident.

Keep in mind that I use this for new wave, brit-pop kind of stuff. Think Andy Summers, Johnny Marr, Elliott Easton, James Honeyman-Scott and Robbie McIntosh (Pretenders), and Gary Sanford from the original Joe Jackson Band (those last two are in reality, Strat guys). I'm not looking for authentic Nashville twang, or the Gatton/Buchanan Tele kinda thing. But I do want something Fendery. So... stick with the tried-and-true, or make a small shift to something close-but-better?

Maybe the 5/2 to tame the shrill highs?

Would an STL-1B Broadcaster's fatter tone tame the highs as well? Would it still provide the low end chunk/clarity/twang that the STL-1 gives me?

BTW, I'm going to un-Esquire this guitar and pair the new bridge pickup with a Fralin Blues Special Strat pickup at the neck (6.2K A5). How will these Duncan bridge pickups match up with the Fralin in terms of timbre and level?

Re: STL-1 or ????

Have you considered a Jerry Donahue? The Alnico II rods in it might be your answer to the brightness of the STL-1.

Re: STL-1 or ????

Rich, the Antiquity Alnico 2 set is awesome. Of all of the vintage sets Duncan makes it's my favorite. It's sort of bright and chimey like a good Tele should be but also smooth. No ice pick in the ear tendencies either. I had them in my Nocaster and when I sold the Nocaster I put the stock pickups back in and kept the Antiquity A2's. If I ever get a second Tele again (I have still have my '54...) they'll go right into it. I love 'em.

Re: STL-1 or ????

Considering both the Antiquity and the JD - does switching to A2 reduce the low-string twang? I've always considered myself and A5 guy, and I love the lower three strings on an STL-1, it's just he top three that get a bit piercing.

I've been a fan of Jerry Donahue's virtuoso playing ever since 1970 when he played in that band with Sandy Denny: Fotheringay. I like the JD Tele pickup too, but not enough to use it. I like a pickup with a little more twang and a little brighter tone. Anyways, the Antiquity Alnico 2 Tele pickup set has plenty of twang and a beautiful chime, especially when I combine the Ant neck and bridge pickups together - one of my favorite rhythm tones.

Re: STL-1 or ????

Ya know, really any of these would be good choices...

I recently had a vintage 54 lead in an Esquire and had forgotten how great that pickup is...a little toppy sure but it's a vintage style tele pickup!

You're right Christian...hard to go wrong with any of the Antiquity Tele pickups or the JD. After trying them all though, I wound up keeping the Antiquity Alnico 2 set. I wasn't looking for a fat overdriven tone as much as the tone I hear in my head and that's the set that did it.

Of course you know what I've had in my Tele for the last few years...same pickups you use! LOL!

Re: STL-1 or ????

I hear ya Lew...I was actually also talking about the Broadcaster or the Alnico II Pros or whatever...all Seymours pickups are great and his Tele pickups all have that great tele tone.

I hadn't actually tried the vintage 54 in a while when I popped that one in an Esquire a few weeks ago...really great sound.

As for your choice, hard to go wrong there too!

Re: STL-1 or ????

Me, I like a bit of beef to go with my twang and clarity. Contact Zhang and have him wind you an alnico V Paul Bunyan set with a nacked neck pickup.
