I've been playing my new "Esquire" quite a bit, and the tapped QP isn't doing it for me. It's like I've recreated my other Tele - the Schecter PT with a 59B and a coil-split. The QP gives me full-on roar or a brighter non-authentic-Tele sound. It's good, but it's not really Fendery. THis guitar needs to be Fendery, since the PT is not.
In the past, I've had several of the old standby, the STL-1 Vintage 54. Great pickup. If I was going to fix this guitar without thinking about it, I'd just automatically get an STL-1, stick it in there, and probably be happy. But, as long as I'm thinking about it, I have to admit that sometimes the STL-1 is a little too bright. I love the clarity and twang ion the low strings, but the top high strings can sometimes be a bit strident.
Keep in mind that I use this for new wave, brit-pop kind of stuff. Think Andy Summers, Johnny Marr, Elliott Easton, James Honeyman-Scott and Robbie McIntosh (Pretenders), and Gary Sanford from the original Joe Jackson Band (those last two are in reality, Strat guys). I'm not looking for authentic Nashville twang, or the Gatton/Buchanan Tele kinda thing. But I do want something Fendery. So... stick with the tried-and-true, or make a small shift to something close-but-better?
Maybe the 5/2 to tame the shrill highs?
Would an STL-1B Broadcaster's fatter tone tame the highs as well? Would it still provide the low end chunk/clarity/twang that the STL-1 gives me?
BTW, I'm going to un-Esquire this guitar and pair the new bridge pickup with a Fralin Blues Special Strat pickup at the neck (6.2K A5). How will these Duncan bridge pickups match up with the Fralin in terms of timbre and level?
